    Tenis de masa

    Romania produce surpriza Campionatului Mondial

Asian countries beating their European counterparts in women’s competitions, it has happened time and time again in the modern era, it has become the norm.

However, to some extent on the afternoon of Friday 2nd May at the ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Championships in Tokyo, the tables were turned.

In the Women’s Championship Division, DPR Korea beat Ukraine but then followed two wins for the old continent; the Netherlands accounted for Chinese Taipei before Romania caused, what must be considered the biggest shock of the tournament to date.

    Bronze Medallists
The no.9 seeds, they beat Korea, the no.3 seeds and bronze medallist two years ago at the Liebherr World Team Championships in the German city of Dortmund.

Furthermore, it was very much a team event; it was one win each from the trio of Elizabeta Samara, Daniela Monteiro-Dodean and Bernadette Szocs.

Seo Hyowon Gives Korea Early Advantage
Seo Hyowon gave Korea the perfect start by beating Bernadette Szocs (8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6). Immediately Elizabeta Samara levelled, she overcame Yang Haeun (11-4, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5).

Matters level, Romania took the lead thanks to the efforts of Daniela Monteiro-Dodean; she accounted for Seok Hajung (11-1, 6-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7).

    Response
The momentum with Romania, Korea responded thanks to the delightful defensive skills of Seo Hyowon; she beat Elizabeta Samara (8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10) to set the scene for a showdown between Bernadette Szocs and Yang Haeun.

Hard fought duels, tense; the first four games were shared, a fifth beckoned.

    Deciding Game
At the change of ends Bernadette Szocs led 5-0; Yang Haeun won the next three points.

Viorel Filimon, the Romanian coach, realising that the momentum was moving in Korea’s favour called “Time Out”; it was surely a shrewd move. It was a time to re-think, steady the ship and maintain the advantage.

However, Yang Haeun levelled at 5-all; surely the balance of power had now swayed in favour of Korea. Not so, Bernadette Szocs won the next six points!

    She won in five games (11-13, 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5); Korea celebrated.
    Quarter-Final
At the quarter-final stage Romania meets Singapore.

Fetele s-au oprit, din pacate, in sferturi, pierzand la Singapore cu 3-1, singura victorie fiind obtinuta de mezina echipei Bernadette Szocs. Oricum, participarea a fost mai mult decat meritorie, peste asteptari.

    Feng Tianwei Again on Duty

Equally on the adjoining table the mind wandered back to Moscow four years ago; Singapore, who had sensationally beaten China in the Women’s Team final, faced Romania.

Only Feng Tianwei remained from the three players who had caused the Moscow sensation; Wang Yuegu and Sun Beibei have both retired from international duty. Yu Mengyu, a member of the 2010 squad but used sparingly, was on duty in the quarter-final duel against Romania with Isabelle Siyun Li completing the line-up.

Understandably Romania fielded the outfit of Elizabeta Samara, Daniela Monteiro-Dodean and Bernadette Szocs; the three players who had served them so well in the surprise first round win against Korea.

    Crucial Win for Yu Mengyu
However, there was to be no repeat of the first round sensation.

Yu Mengyu gave Singapore the perfect start; she beat Yu Mengyu (11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 2-11, 11-7), before Feng Tianwei overcame Daniela Monteiro-Dodean (12-10, 11-8, 11-9) and then brought matters to a conclusion by defeating Elizabeta Samara (11-8, 11-5, 11-9).

The one win for Romania was recorded by Bernadette Szocs; in the third match of the fixture she beat Isabelle Siyun Li (4-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8).

“As a team we performed very well, we were fighting till the end”, said Jing Jun Hong, the Singapore coach. “Romania was very aggressive approaching the match, fresh off yesterday’s victory against Korea but we were able to control the match and attack their weaknesses.”

Undoubtedly it was a good team effort but the win recorded by Yu Mengyu was vital; a fact Jing Jun Hong acknowledged.

“Yu Mengyu’s victory was very crucial for us, It boiled down to her confidence in the end”, added Jing Jun Hong. “At the start of the match it’s all about getting into the right state of mind and seeing who’s more settled and calm during the key moments; Yu Mengyu was more calm and confident in the end.”

A calm performance from Yu Mengyu, from Feng Tianwei it was the same; a most professional victory was posted.

Szocs e senzationala.
