1. Rurouni Kenshin 1996 - It's somewhat made after real events, Kenshin Himura (Kenshin "The Battousai") being the key assassin in the rebellion that led to the overthrow of the shogunate in the late 19th century and instauration of a very early and unstable democracy for the 1st time in Japan(Meiji government). A time in which the main story of the series takes place, the young democracy still haunted by the blood-gorged so called honor of the samurai regime who had the life-death right over the commoners, and the ghosts of the bloody revolution in which Kenshin was the main figure, ghosts who come revisit him and to whom he must give his answer with his no-kill engraved reversed-blade sword.
It's one of the coolest plots(made before 1st ep starts) ever in an anime, better still because it's based on real events, the years and the locations of the main center stages of the revolution(Edo and Kyoto) are adequate historically, and the action of the anime does not fail to deliver accordingly.
10/10 rating for drama + sword fight, best sword fights in history of anime - and also realistic!
2. Claymore 2007 - Fantasy anime. It's made after a faithfully constructed copy of the medieval times part of human history, just added into the picture some fearsome creatures called Yoma that enjoy eating human organs, especially the brain and can see the memories while eating the brain and therefore copycat the victim, and women-superwarriors with big swords called claymores that have unnaturally ingested parts of Yoma for the purpose of becoming strong enough to be able to detect and take out Yoma, therefore protecting the clueless and defenseless human kind of this malevolent deamons. Best drama-fantasy for my money 10/10 rating.
3. Little Princess Sara 1985 - In this one I cryed in buckets, best drama I have ever seen in an anime/movie, but for this I will use another guys words to describe it spoilerfree ofcoarse. This is but just one fragment from the largest review I have ever seen in my life on IMDB(regardless of the type of the show) to Little Princess Sara: "Still, what a painful-to-watch show for the many heart-breaking moments it features, a heart-piercing music and these countless moments where Sarah comes back at the attic and cries, between Emily and her family photograph. 'Princess Sarah' another success of the 'World Masterpiece Theater' really deserves the 'masterpiece' title as we didn't just watch "Sarah', she became a part of ourselves. I remember these early 90's days where Sarah was in everybody's thoughts and mouths, when we all waited for her to get a break. Basically, it was the girl's cartoon boys watched like "Captain Tsubasa" was the opposite." Best pure drama in history of human kind for me 10/10 easy!
I do not recomand anyone to look for the rest of the review because this bit is the only spoiler free part of it! ^^''
4. Captain Tsubasa 1983 - As the previous fragment of review sugested, it's the other epic anime for the children of 90s. It's an epic journey alongside a genius of football called Tsubaza Odzora since his debut in football on an elementary zero-talent team called like his own school(and town) FC Nancatsu, to one of the greatest youth footballers of the world 8-10 years later, tribute to him rising a forcefully football(soccer for the stupid) Japan National Youth Team that gives even Karl Heinz Schneider(captain of Germany - superstriker) or Diaz (captain of Argentina - similar to Maradona or Messi) chills down the spine! I'm not even gonna mention Brazil with its insane techniched footballers amongst them Santana - God of Football xD!
Even if not so funny, it's still better than Hajime no Ippo (rating 9/10) which I've just watched and is also great, and not just better but even more intense and for longer periods of time because the matches of football last much longer than the ones of boxing, at least in the fashion the anime presents them. 10/10 rating again - best sports anime ever.
Nominees: except the ones presented in 1st fragment: DBZ, etc. there would be: Gundam Seed(rating 9/10), Berserk (9/10), Hajime no Ippo (9/10 - already presented), HunterXHunter (8/10), Fate Stay Night (7.5/10 - best weapon design), Van Helsing (8/10 - cool dark scenes, maybe best). There sure may be some I've seen and forgot to mention, but not many I think.
