    French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt has died during the night, aged 24.

    French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Montcourt’s death had been confirmed by Patrice Dominguez, the French Tennis Federation’s Technical Director.

    Presently, the cause of death is unknown, although radio station RMC has reported that he suffered a pulmonary embolism.

    The French Tennis Federation is expected to release a statement later today.

    Paris native Montcourt was currently No. 119 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings and last month reached a career high of No. 104, shortly after reaching the second round at Roland Garros – where he lost to No. 19 Radek Stepanek in four sets.

    Vestea asta chiar m-a socat. Dumnezeu sa-l odihneasca. Din punctul meu de vedere, avea sanse mari la cum juca sa intre in top 100 pana la finele anului. Ce tragedie!

    Tenismanul Mathieu Montcourt, găsit mort în locuința sa din Paris!

    Tenismanul francez Mathieu Montcourt, în vârstă de 24 de ani, a fost găsit mort în fața apartamentului său din Boulogne-Billancourt, suburbie a Parisului, au anunțat, azi, surse ale poliției franceze.
    Corpul lui Montcourt nu prezentat nicio urmă aparent suspectă. Fostul sportiv a fost descoperit de prietena sa fără viață în noaptea de luni spre marți, lângă scările imobilului, la parter, chiar în fața ușii apartamentului său.
    Prietena lui Montcourt a anunțat imediat poliția. Ea a precizat că nu a există nicio urmă pe cadavru care să ducă cu gândul la o crimă. O autopsie urmează să fie efectuată miercuri dimineață.
    Montcourt, locul 119 în clasamentul ATP, a fost suspendat timp de opt săptămâni, în august, 2008, din cauza faptului că a pariat pe meciurile de tenis în cursul anului 2005. În mai 2009, Tribunalul de Arbitraj Sportiv (TAS) i-a redus suspendarea jucătorului francez la șase săptămâni.
    Mai apoi TAS i-a redus suspendare lui Mathieu Montcourt la mai puțin de șase săptămâni, dar a păstrat amenda de 12.000 de dolari aplicată sportivului de către ATP. Tribunalul de la Lausanne a ținut seama de "sumele mici pariate (192 de dolari în total pe 36 de jocuri)," lipsa de influență a pariurilor legate de aceste meciuri și de faptul că Montcourt nu a pariat pe propriile jocuri" .

    Manacor, Spain - July 7th 2009

    This morning I woke up to one of the worst news anyone can receive. I heard about the death of my friend Mathieu Montcourt and I am still in shock, I can't believe it.

    I knew Mathieu since we were kids. We competed together at all the events at an international level for kids: Les Petit As, Copa Borotta, etc, and of course, we played again afterwards after we became professionals.

    When someone like this disappears, when something like this happens, you realize where you are and you put into perspective your life, winning or losing a tennis match, not competing at an event and everything else. This is the loss of a guy who was only 24 and who was a sportsman. He won't be playing with us again.

    I would like to send my deepest and most sincere condolences to his family, to his friends and to the French fans.

    Mathieu, Rest in peace.
