    Pršo signs Rangers deal

    Monday, 10 May 2004

Croatian international striker Dado Pršo will join Rangers FC in July from UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco FC on a three-year deal.

    Glasgow talks

The 29-year-old has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Scottish club after flying to Glasgow for talks on Saturday. "I have watched Pršo many times this season," said Rangers manager Alex McLeish. "He is very direct and he has a great presence which is just what we need. I am absolutely delighted to have signed a player of his calibre."

    Prominent figure

Pršo has figured prominently in Monaco's run to the Champions League final, scoring seven goals including four in the 8-3 victory against RC Deportivo La Coruńa in November.

I've lost someone who often proved decisive for us

    Didier Deschamps

    'Excellent rapport'

"Rangers welcomed me in an extraordinary way," said Pršo. "I immediately had an excellent rapport with the manager and it became clear that I would sign." The forward's coach at Monaco, Didier Deschamps, added: "I feel mixed emotions. On the one hand, it's a good deal for him, on the other I've lost someone who often proved decisive for us."

    Rebuilding squad

Rangers, who trail champions Celtic FC by 16 points with two games left after losing 1-0 to their rivals on Saturday, have already started rebuilding for next season's Champions League campaign. McLeish has also signed AJ Auxerre defender Jean-Alain Boumsong, Livingston FC's Marvin Andrews and midfield player Alex Rae from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on pre-contract agreements

LYON Edge Closer To Third Straight Title
Lyon are on the verge of sealing their third title in a row despite a 1-0 defeat at PSG.

Pauleta scored the only goal of the game early on, but this defeat should prove academic after Monaco's shock 4-1 reverse at home to Rennes.

Alexander Frei gave the visitors the lead only for Fernando Morientes -later stretchered off with an ankle injury- to equalise. But an Olivier Monterrubio penalty and two more from Kim Kallstrom gave Rennes an unlikely victory.

Lyon can only now be caught by PSG who are three points behind them but their difference is 15 goals worse.

Auxerre remain in fourth after Djibril Cisse scored twice in a 2-0 win over Nantes.

Jeremy Mathieu, Francileudo dos Santos and Pierre Alain-Frau were on target as Sochaux kept up the pressure on Auxerre with a 3-0 win over Le Mans who may be relegated next week.

Uefa Cup finalists Marseille went down 2-1 at Toulouse. They went ahead through a Issoumailia Dao own goal, but Fernandao equalised from the spot and Eduardo Da Silva scored the winner.

Ajaccio are on the brink of relegation after a 2-0 defeat at Lens. Papa Bouba Diop and Charles-Edouard Coridon got the goals.

Elsewhere Guingamp went down to Nice, Montpellier were relegated with a 2-1 defeat to Strasbourg, Lille beat Bastia 2-0 thanks to Milenko Acimovic and Matt Moussilou, while Metz are safe after beating Bordeuax 3-1.

France: Marseille and Monaco end with draw

MARSEILLE, Oct 29 (SW) - In the battle for fourth place in the French Ligue 1, Olympique Marseille and AS Monaco held each other to a 1-1 draw.

After twenty minutes, UEFA Cup finalists Olympique Marseille took the lead through a goal from Koke, but thirteen minutes later, Mohammed Kallon, former Internazionale striker, levelled for the Champions League runners-up AS Monaco.

Monaco will have to play their next match without Evra, who was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.

Currently, Monaco are in fourth position with 20 points from 12 matches, and Marseilla are in fifth with one point less.

France: Ten-man PSG prevail over Marseille; Lille keep pace with LyonPARIS, Nov 7 (SW) – Despite playing a man down for most of the match, Paris St. Germain managed to come out 2-1 winners at the Parc des Princes over Marseille on Sunday while Lille won to jump back to a point behind leaders Lyon.
PSG were down to ten men just inside 20 minutes when Sylvain Armand was given a straight red card for a late challenge on Fabrice Fiorese. However, the home side got the first goal in the 31st minute with a beautiful shot on the edge of the area, but Laurent Batlles got Marseille level ten minutes later. PSG jumped into the top half of the table for the first time this season when Edouard Cissé got his first goal for PSG in the 70th minute.

Lille were 2-0 winners at winless Istres to boost themselves back to within a single point of league leaders Lyon, who won on Saturday. Istres, who are currently propping up the Ligue 1 table, found themselves down at home in the 38th minutes when striker Peter Odemwingie gave Lille the lead. Philippe Brunel then put the match out of reach from the penalty spot five minutes into the second half with his fifth league goal of the season.

In the other match on Sunday, Nantes managed a 1-1 draw with third-placed Auxerre despite themselves playing with ten men for most of the second half. Mamadou Bagayoko’s fourth goal of the season just before the interval put Nantes in the lead, but the home team were reduced to ten when Emerse Fae was sent off ten minutes into the second term for his second bookable offense of the match. Teemu Tainio’s first goal of the season gave Auxerre a share of the points in the 77th minute.

France: No surprises at the top in Ligue 1

PARIS, Nov 13 (SW) - Lyon made no mistakes at home against Nantes, while Auxerre reached a small win against Ajaccio. Girondins de Bordeaux were convincing and easily defeated PSG.

Reigning French champions Olympique de Lyon maintained their gap with the rest, beating Nantes 2-0. Frau opened the score in the first minute of the second half, and Govou got the second goal for the hosts in the 57th minute.

AJ Auxerre booked a narrow win, at home over Ajaccio. Two minutes before the hour mark, Lachuer scored the only goal for the current numbers three of the Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, Sochaux were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation candidates Istres. Courtois had even put the visitors ahead in the 56th minute, but with eight minutes left to go, Mathieu limited the damage for Sochaux.

Olympique de Marseille hosted Strasbourg and made the difference with goals from Bamogo and Pardo in the second half, for a final 2-0 win.

Against Caen, home side Metz crashed to a 1-2 defeat, despite taking the lead through Gueye in the 39th minute. Just ahead of the interval, Bakour levelled and Mazure decided the clash with the second goal for his team in the final phase.

In a mid-table meeting, Bordeaux were far too strong for Paris Saint-Germain. The unfortunate Pichot scored an own goal in favour of Bordeaux, and in the second half, Laslandes and Rool increased the distance, for an eventual 3-0 victory over the Parisians.

In other matches on Saturday, Rennes and Toulouse held each other to a 1-1 draw, as well as Nice and Lens, while Saint-Etienne had a convincing 0-3 win at Bastia.

On Sunday, second-placed Lille face AS Monaco in the only remaining game of this matchround.

For the fourth time in a row, France were held to a draw at home, this time 0-0 against Poland. The only real chance came in the second half when substitute Sidney Govou smacked a shot against the goalpost.

France: Lyon extend lead at top of Ligue 1

LYON, Nov 27 (SW) – Lyon stretched their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to six points over idle Lille with a 2-1 victory over Auxerre at the Stade Gerland on Saturday.

Sylvain Wiltord scored on just six minutes to give the home side an early lead and midfielder Juninho doubled the advantage with another goal in the 29th minute. Benoit Cheyrou pulled one back for Auxerre in the 66th minute, the first goal allowed by Lyon since August, but it was not enough as Lyon took full points.

Just three days after manager José Anigo announced his resignation as manager, Marseille recorded a 3-1 victory at home against Nantes. Philippe Troussier signed a two-year deal with Marseille on Saturday, but Albert Emon was on the bench for this game and Abdoulaye Meite put the home side ahead on the quarter-hour and Fabrice Fiorese doubled the lead six minutes later. Gilles Yapi Yapo got one back for Nantes in the 58th, but Alexander Viveros was sent off in the 66th, leaving Nantes with ten men. Steve Marlet got a late insurance goal for Marseille.

Monaco were held to a 0-0 draw at Toulouse on Saturday evening, leaving the side from the principality winless in nine league matches. They currently sit seventh in the standings, 13 points adrift of Lyon.

Bordeaux were also held 0-0 at home by Ajaccio to send them 12 points behind the leaders.

Rennes leapt into the top half of the table thanks to a 3-1 home victory over Istres. Olivier Sorlin propelled Rennes into the lead on nine minutes and it was in the 56th minute that Olivier Monterrubio made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. Steven Pele cut the lead in half in the 81st minute, but Sorlin completed his brace with a goal at the end. Istres are still winless in their 16 league games this season.

Saint-Etienne twice came from a goal behind to draw 2-2 at Metz. Mehdi Meniri put Metz in front on seven minutes, but Julien Sable quickly answered for Saint-Etienne six minutes later. Metz’s lead was restored in the 22nd minute through a Gregory Proment penalty, but in the 73rd minute, Vincent Hognon equalized for the visitors to earn a point.

Finally, Bastia defeated Caen 2-0 at home in a battle between two teams in the wrong half of the table. Djibril Sidibe opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Tony Vairelles made it 2-0 on 58 minutes to seal the victory.

France: Lille draw at home, lose ground to Lyon

LILLE, Nov 28 (SW) – Lille’s deficit at the top of the table is now five points after they failed to defeat Strasbourg at home, drawing 1-1 at the Stade Métropole.

It was Strasbourg who struck first, taking a surprise 1-0 lead away from home through Senegalese international Mamadou Niang. Lille’s blushes were somewhat saved late on when Peter Odemwingie scored the equalizer for the home side in the 84th minute.

Lyon won their match yesterday and had a six-point lead coming into today, but will be happy having increased their lead by two points this weekend.

Elsewhere in France, ten-man Paris St. Germain were held 1-1 at OGC Nice. Fabrice Pancrate put PSG in front on 35 minutes and they appeared to be cruising until Edouard Cissé received his second yellow card in the 64th minute and was dismissed. Sammy Traore got the equalizer three minutes later for Nice and kept PSG out of the top half of the table, a spot the men from the capital haven’t been in all season.

Lens scored two goals late on to record an impressive 2-1 victory at third-placed Sochaux. Souleymane Diawara put the home side in front on 72 minutes, but a quick equalizer five minutes later came via Daniel Cousin. It appeared as if the team’s would split the points, but Pape Sarr scored the winner at the death to lift Lens to victory.

UEFA Cup: Sporting shocked at home by Sochaux; Panionios stun Dinamo

LISBON/ATHENS, Dec 1 (SW) – An early goal by Johann Lonfat was enough to see Sochaux upend Sporting Lisbon at the Estádio José Alvalade on Wednesday, and Panionios turned it on late to defeat a feisty Dinamo Tbilisi side.

Sochaux were able to score on their first chance of the game to really shift momentum to their side early. In the second minute, a defensive miscue allowed Swiss international Lonfat to gather the ball and shoot past Ricardo for a quick 1-0 lead.

Sporting will now have to earn a point in their final game to secure a spot in the last 32, the same thing Sochaux will need to do.

At the Nea Smyrni in Athens, Panionios overcame a 2-1 second-half deficit to defeat Georgian club Dinamo Tbilisi 5-2.

Mikheil Kakaladze put Dinamo surprisingly in front 1-0 in the 38th minute and held that lead until the second half when Vaggelis Mantzios leveled for the Greeks in the 58th.

Two minutes later, Dinamo’s lead was restored when Lado Akhalaia hit the back of the net, but again Panionios were able to equalize, Mantzios getting his second in the 67th minute.

Mantzios completed his hat trick in the 78th minute to give Panionios their first lead of the match, and Mario Breška and Carlos Marcora added goals in stoppage time to complete what was only a late rout.

Newcastle United are now through to the final 32 despite being idle today and will play Sporting at St. James’ in 13 days while Sochaux host Panionios, a battle for the final spot from Group D.

UEFA Cup: AZ shock Rangers to advance, Auxerre crush Amica

ALKMAAR/AUXERRE, Dec 2 (SW) - AZ Alkmaar defeated Glasgow Rangers to advance to the third round of the UEFA Cup, while AJ Auxerre left group minnows Amica Wronki without a chance.

In Alkmaar, the hosts took the lead against the current Scottish leaders after seven minutes through Danny Landzaat, and although Rangers managed to recover from that early blow, the team of coach McLeish failed to level despite creating several chances. As the score remained 1-0, the 8,200 spectators saw how their team qualified for the next round with three consecutive wins.

More goals were scored in France, where AJ Auxerre hosted Amica Wronki. In the very first minute, Auxerre opened the score with a goal from Mignot, and not much later it was Pierono to double the gap. Kryszalowicz got one back for Amica, but Pieroni hit the net twice more, in the 24th and 26th minutes, and Bonaventure Kalou got the fifth and last goal of the night, 5-1 in the 56th minute.

AZ Alkmaar lead with nine points from three matches, and Rangers follow with six. Auxerre share the third position with Grazer AK, both with four points, but the French have a better goal record. Amica Wronki have completed their four matches in Group F, and are left without points.

Monaco clinch long-awaited win against Rennes

MONACO, Dec 3 (SW) – AS Monaco have ended a 9-game winless run, after defeating Stade Rennais 2-0 tonight, at the Louis II stadium.

Didier Deschamps and his men having been unable to collect a win since September 22nd (2-1 against Nantes), pressure was on the Principality side ahead of their home clash with mid-table outfit Rennes.

Having slowly drifted 13 lengths off current French leaders and heavy title favourites Olympique Lyonnais, the hosts were eager to get back to winning ways, despite the absence of goalkeeper Flavio Roma, Plasil, Bernardi, Rodriguez, and Nonda.

And Monaco eventually got their long-awaited three points, as Mohamed Kallon and Ernesto Javier Chevanton sealed their side’s victory thanks to two first-half winning efforts.

An undecisive Isaksson handed the Sierra-Leone player the best opportunity to open the score in the 29th minute, while Chevanton won his one-to-one encounter with the Sweden international keeper two minutes later to double Monaco’s advantage.

Tonight’s result will be yet another away disappointment for Laszlo Bölöni’s side, Rennes having been unable to clinch a single win away from home this season.

France: Lyon and Lille draw, Marseille win at Caen

PARIS, Dec 4 (SW) - Both Olympique Lyon and Lille were held to 1-1 draws on Saturday, while Olympique Marseille reached a 2-3 win at Caen.

French Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyon were held to a 1-1 draw at the Corsican team Ajaccio. Juninho thought to have scored the winning goal for Lyon, but Pereira levelled three minutes later, giving the home crowd a point to celebrate.

At Parc de Princes, Second-placed Lille visited Paris Saint German and reached the same result, 1-1. After sixteen minutes, Bodmer put Lille ahead, but in the 33rd it was Reinaldo to equalize for PSG.

Olympique Marseille had a 2-3 victory at Caen. Bamogo's goal in the first half was cancelled out by Caen's Dufer, but the second half had Bamogo restoring Marseille's lead with a penalty kick, after which Koke decided the match with the visitors' third goal. A converted penalty from Watier in the 81st minute, could not threat Olympique's lead. Caen played the entire second half with ten men, as Hengbart was expulsed just before the break.

Strasbourg held Sochaux to a scoreless draw in the north-east of France. For the hosts, Niang was booked while Paisley and Mathieu saw yellow cards for the guests.

Nantes suffered a small 0-1 defeat by Nice. The only goal of the match was scored just ahead of the half hour mark, and came from Balmont.

Lens had a 2-0 win over Metz, as Utaka opened the score for the homeside in the 35th minute, and Keita doubled the lead in the 67th. Metz were unable to find their way back into the game during the remaining 23 minutes.

Another scoreless draw was the outcome of the match between Saint-Etienne and Toulouse, and Istres had a 1-0 win over Bastia, with a goal from N'Diaye. For Bastia, André was sent off in the 70th minute.

On Sunday, Auxerre and Bordeaux face each other in the last game of this matchround.

France: Auxerre held at home by Girondins

AUXERRE, Dec 6 (SW) – AJ Auxerre have failed to enter France’s top trio after being held to a goalless draw by Michel Pavon’s Girondins of Bordeaux.

Guy Roux’ men, who easily defeated Amica Wroncki 5-1 in the UEFA Cup last Thursday, were willing to confirm their good form and end a prolific week with a win against Bordeaux.

But the hosts failed to do so and subsequently take third spot in the French table, after being held to a goalless draw by a more convincing Bordeaux side.

The visitors, who created the best opportunities of the game through Chamakh and France international midfielder Meriem, could have indeed exploited Auxerre’s obvious lack of accuracy to collect their 6th win this season, but failed to break the Abbé-Deschamps deadlock, as the game ended with a goalless score line.

Auxerre, who have failed to clinch a win in the last 3 league encounters, are now 5th in the table with 26 points, while Bordeaux remain 7th with 25 points.

CL Preview: Monaco, Liverpool and Olympiacos battle for last 16 berth

A CORUNA/LIVERPOOL, Dec 8 (SW) – With Monaco, Liverpool and Olympiacos still able to advance to the next round of the Champions League, tension will be high as the Reds host the current Greek league leaders, while Deschamps and his men travel to Deportivo.

The Champions League group stage drawing to an end, Wednesday night is likely to be a great night of football... and mathematics. With Monaco, Olympiacos and Liverpool still able to clinch a berth in the last 16 of the European competition, every single scenario is currently being thought of.

Monaco travel to a Deportivo side which has already lost any chances of extending its European adventure, the Spaniards finding themselves at the bottom of Group A, with only 2 points and not a single goal to show for.

Didier Deschamps will be counting on in-form Saviola, Chevanton, Adebayor and Kallon to seal his side’s victory at the Riazor. Although Monaco has been struggling in their domestic league, their late win against Rennes last Friday (2-0) is bound to have boosted the confidence of a side more than willing to repeat last year’s European performances.

Meanwhile, Benitez’ Reds face current group leaders Olympiacos at Anfield, in what promises to be a crucial encounter for the English. A 1-0 win (or a victory by two clear goals) over the Greeks would be enough to see Liverpool go through to next round, while a 2-1 or 3-2 win would be enough, should the Principality outfit fail to win against Deportivo.

The last thing Rafael Benitez will be wanting is Liverpool players starting to calculate their way through to the last 16, the Spanish tactician still confident his side can win the crucial crunch game and advance in this year’s Champions League campaign.

France: Lyon clinch winter championship with draw

LYON, Dec 17 (SW) – Despite having won the last three Ligue 1 titles, Lyon today won their first-ever winter championship in France after playing to a 1-1 draw with Marseille at the Stade Gerland.

It was the visiting Marseille, in just their third game under Philippe Troussier, who scored the match’s first goal in just the third minute, Peguy Luyindula beating goalkeeper Nicolas Puydebois after Eric Abidal dropped back a pass for him to receive.

It wasn’t until the 35th minute that the 37,000+ crowd in Lyon were back in the game when French international Sidney Govou scored after a brilliant pass on the end line by Sylvain Wiltord, leaving goalkeeper Jérémy Gavanon helpless to stop the equalizer.

In the closing stages of the game, Marseille were definitely the stronger side on the pitch and almost had the lead near the 75 minute mark, but Benoit Pedretti’s free kick, headed on goal by Demetrius Ferreira, was brilliantly stopped by Puydebois.

Paul Le Guen and Lyon have now a four-point lead over Lille, who can cut the gap to a single point heading into the break with a win at Ajaccio on Saturday.

    Deschamps plays down Semak link

MONACO, Dec 17 (SW) – AS Monaco manager Didier Deschamps has played down any contact with CSKA Moscow striker Sergey Semak.

The 28-year-old Russian forward, who netted a treble against PSG in the last round of CSKA's Champions League group stage (1-3) and subsequently put an end to the Parisian outfit’s European campaign, had been linked to a number of European sides, including PSG themselves and Monaco.

Today, Monaco tactician Didier Deschamps has denied any contact had been established with the Russian ace.

“This player (Semak) won’t be coming. There has been no bid from Monaco. If a player comes to us, which is still unsure and is definitely not linked to a departure from one of our players, it will not be him,” confirmed Deschamps during a press conference.

The defender is still tied with l’OM until 2006, but would be ready to put an end to his playing career to join French TV channel TF1 as a football consultant.
