    Tatiana Totmianina & Maxim Marinin

    Short on money,
    But long on time,
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine,
    And i'm running late,
And i don't need an excuse,
'cause i'm wearing my brand new shoes.

Tatiana Totmianina, Maxim Marinin: "We are just like we were before Torino."

    By Elena Vajtsekhovskaya

It's almost feels like Olympic champions Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin spent a year and a half after 2006 Games in a shadow - they didn't go to social events, weren't in the commercials, and event the all-star TV show was over for them barely after it began.

However, when I met the skaters last week at the St. Petersburg rink, I was sincerely surprised - they are in shape, and they can go compete even tomorrow!

Tania, who came for the interview a bit earlier than her partner, rejected that idea right away, "No, no, we are just getting ready for the next show. This time it's in Korea."

    - Weren't you attracted by the idea at all: get the good rest after the Games and come back later?

Tatiana: We were. The questions was about RFSF helping us with sponsors. We satisfied our ambitions in sports, everything that was possible. We only wanted some consistency and not having to think about any bad jump leading our families into hunger. Maxim and I went through it once when we were coming back to Russia in the fall of 2005 after I felt from the lift in Pittsburgh. We had $300 each and we didn't know whether we'll be able to keep skating. We gave our whole life to skating and that's the only way we can earn money.

Right after the Games were over, but everyone was still ecstatic, we were told everywhere that finding a money is not a problem, just come back. When we came to Moscow two months later and met with RFSF President, we really were ready to discuss the further actions. Turned out, nobody can give us any guarantees. We notified the Federation about our vacation plans, we said once again that we are ready to start serious training on July 1st if the financial problems will be resolved by that time. However, nobody called us back. So we finally realized that our further well-being depends on us and we picked the show.

    - Is it interesting for you?

We are attracted by the opportunity to do variety of the programs without thinking about how this or that underrotated turn will affect us. Artistically, we still give 100% on the ice.

    - It is noticeable. Do you reach such a high level of skating because of your previous experience or is that a results of every-day routine work?

We try to keep that level very much. I think the title of Olympic champions puts certain responsibility upon us. So we come to practice and work seriously at least once a day. This summer, we even went to our coach Oleg Vasiliev to Chicago to do the new programs and get back in shape at least partially as we wasted it during the vacation. It's easy in skating - the longer you skate on the high level, the longer you'll get invited to the shows. Even if you are a two-time Olympic champions, if you perform with the what's left from the old, no serious producer will be interest. Maybe Maxim and I are just crazy?

    - So, weren't you even tempted to loosen up even a little bit?

Of course we were. First six months after Torino we didn't want to do anything. When I came home from the Collins tour several months later, I had 6.5 kg of extra weight, and I felt that my knees were hurting. I quickly realized this was a going to a dead-end. So, since last fall we returned to the usual work - we skate, we go to gym, do choreography...

    - How was it to loose daily coaching care? Were you bothered when Vasiliev was spending all his time with other skaters?

Oleg never pushed us to do anything even when we were competing. He was able to explain it right away - everything that we do, we do it for us. He still helps us to discuss participating in the shows. He took most of the administrative work upon himself. Even when we come to the rink where the other pairs train, Vasiliev always watches us from the side. If he sees mistakes, he tells us. So there are no hurt feelings or jealousy.

    - What was the conflict with Collins tour this summer about?

Nothing too scandalous. We came earlier, started to rehearse and perform, but we weren't too happy with the schedule this year. It was spread over two months, with two, maximum three performances a week. This schedule was convenient for the Americans - you skate on the weekend and go home. Maxim and I either had to fly to Russia or find a place to stay in America. Vasiliev made a deal with Collins - we wouldn't stay in his tour at the end, and instead keep skating in Russia with Ilia Averbukh.

    - Was Collins upset?

I don't think so. We still have a contract that expires in two years. I don't know if there'll be a tour next year. It didn't go well this year. There were too little fans attending. Maybe that's why Sasha Cohen signed a contract with Stars On Ice for the next year, and this company is Collins' competitor.

    - Another subject of conflict is you relationship with Evgeni Plushenko. As far as I know, it got a bit tense after you refused to perform in his show.

We think this subject should've not been discussed at all. All issues about our relationship were discussed with Ice Vision management in advance. This is the company that organized the show. We warned them that we'll skate with Averbukh. Zhenya probably heard about it by accident. He might've said something somewhere, the information got out, and was immediately blown out of proportion by the tabloids. They just love creating a negative sensationalism.

Maxim: After the Olympics, Zhenya's persona became too public. Everything that he says and does attracts extra attention from the press. Any word, carelessly said out loud, becomes a reason for a separate discussion.

    - Thanks to numerous shows and TV programs in Russia, skaters are now seen as very rich people. Does it affect your everyday life?

Tatiana: Suddenly, I started to have many relatives. They call and introduce themselves. I'm puzzled how they found out my phone number.

    - Following this logic, Maxim's kids should start appearing all over the country?

Maxim: I was never know for the party behavior, so I don't think it's a threat for me. I know I don't have children yet.

    - While you were training, your fiancée told me your first baby is due in September. Tanya got a dog. Was that in solidarity?

Tatiana: It's not the same. I would like to have a child more, but it's not happening now.

    - Is the dog cure from loneliness?

Of course. When you go around the world, you are constantly surrounded by the same people. Sometimes, you realize you don't want to see anybody. Spending several months in a show without possibility to change the environment is very hard psychologically. A dog is always glad to see you and you care for it. You pick it up, hold it in your arms, and feel better right away.

    - Your coach said you helped him a lot, working with the pairs in Chicago before coming to Russia. Did you like training the others?

Maxim: It was interesting for me. I wouldn't call it coaching. We weren't responsible for the hints we gave, but we felt we can really teach something.

Tatiana: When Oleg went to Germany for several days, I worked with Masha Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov. I couldn't be myself for three days after the first practice I held independently - I was so tired from being focused all the time. The coach has to keep a ton of things in mind, feel the skaters condition, whether they can go for an element so they wouldn't get injured, and more. I can't imagine withstanding this job daily, and not even talking about going with someone to the competitions.

Maxim: I really understood how much work is needed for even a little progress. I realized how hard was it for Oleg with us and what it cost him to lead Tania and me to the medal. The skaters is very egotistical. They don't get enough sleep or can't do something in practice, everyone around them is guilty, and the coach is first of all.

Tatiana: I'll never forget how in Torino, I suddenly felt really scared for the first time in my life before going on ice and skating the free program. I felt like the weights, one tone each, were suddenly attached to my feet. I couldn't imagine pushing myself to make a step. I turned to Oleg and said, "I'm scared. He said in completely smooth and calm voice, "Guys, don't worry, everything will be fine." It calmed me down so much, I threw all the fears out of my head.

Maxim: By saying that, Oleg really took the entire responsibility for our performance. I still can't understand how he was able to say it without a shadow of a doubt on his face, but we got the result. Both Tania and me thought the same, "If he is so calm, why should we worry?"

    - Did that performance flew by or did it stay in memory with all the details?

I felt like a robot. As soon as the music started, my head went automatic. I had no emotion. The program was skated so much by that time, we didn't worry about the quality. It was more important to make ourselves to turn off the brains so they wouldn't stop the body from doing what we were preparing for all our lives. This feeling of skating, jumping, smiling, but it was like it's not happening to you, it was the strongest feeling.

Tatiana: I felt the same. When we did the final lift and started entering into the death spiral, Maxim suddenly yelled out. My conscience came back to me then and I saw everything - people standing up and starting to applaud.

    - How soon did you feel you were the Olympic champions?

It's still a fairy tale for me. Only when I see the youngster on ice and see how hard they work, I feel strange thinking that past me already.

Maxim: Nothing changed much. Of course, I am very satisfied because I worked for an exceptional goal for so many years and I achieved it, that it was me, not somebody else, winning that only medal, that 25 years of my life weren't spent for nothing.

    - Did that title change how people treat you?

Tatiana: It's all different. At times, it seems to me that people get unexplainable jealous. We really didn't change after getting the gold in Torino. I don't feel any difference and feel uncomfortable when people give me extra attention. I recently came to a rink in St. Petersburg with a puppy that is small enough to be in the palms of my hands, and one of the security guards started yell angrily so entire hallway could hear, "You won't walk in there with the dog". I asked him not to scream and waited for the director to come downstairs. He allowed me in but they still said behind my back, "So what, a star of the screen…."

    - How free are you to plan your further life?

We have an approximate performing schedule that we constantly correct because we get new offers. In a year and a half since Torino, we only were home in St. Petersburg for a month. We are leaving now again, until May.

    - Maxim, do you think about allocating a time for the family in your schedule?

Maxim: It's easier for me - a man has to earn money first of all to support the family. And I love my job, I do what I like. I see how much joy it gives to people. It's very important for me. I've also noticed many times that as soon as you start building long-term plans, they fall apart right away. So, I'm not guessing anything yet, but I think a lot about how my family will. I realize I'm not alone anymore.
