Kimmie Meissner finished first in the short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Thursday in Spokane, taking a comfortable lead in her bid for her first national title.

Meissner's routine earned her 65.69 points, giving her a solid lead over Bebe Liang and fellow Olympian Emily Hughes.

The 17-year-old stunned the skating world by becoming the first woman to win a world championship before a national title since Kristi Yamaguchi in 1991.

Liang was a surprise second in the short program with 62.66 points, while Hughes garnered 62.32 points.

"Doing a good short makes me feel a lot better going into the long," Meissner told reporters.

The free skate will be held on Saturday.

In the men's short program, Evan Lysacek posted a personal-best 78.99 points total to lead three-times champion Johnny Weir.

Weir trails him by less than a point at 78.14 points heading into Saturday's free skate.

He has won the last three U.S. titles, but Lysacek holds the edge internationally, with back-to-back bronze medals at the world championships.
