England kept their dream of a Grand Slam alive after beating Scotland 22-16 in a scrappy encounter at Twickenham.

Martin Johnson's side went into the match as overwhelming favourites but were made to work hard for the win by a hungry Scottish outfit who fought gallantly for their first win at Twickenham since 1983.

The match was level 9-9 at the break but England looked to have broken clear 10 minutes from time when Tom Croft, returning from injury, forced his way over the line for a converted try which made it 19-9.

However, a lovely chip and gather from Max Evans four minutes later put Scotland back to within a penalty of the English only for England to see the game home, helped by a late penalty from substitute Jonny Wilkinson.

The victory virtually assures England the Six Nations title, with Wales now the only side that can stop them, but England will have eyes on the bigger prize of the Grand Slam crown – which they will achieve if they can beat Ireland in Dublin next Saturday.

More to follow
