The first generation of swarming, implemented within the Swarmcast™ product from OpenCola in 2000, required that files be fully downloaded and decoded before the files could be used. The various Swarmcast clones used by P2P file sharers also share this limitation.

Now on its third generation of the swarming technology, Onion Networks has introduced Swarmstreaming™. This new technology greatly enhances swarming by allowing streaming or progressive playback of media files. This means that users can watch videos while they are still being downloaded. Furthermore, through the use of Random Access Acceleration technology, enterprise applications can access large files in a streaming or random access fashion while gaining all of the speed and reliability benefits of the base swarming technology.

Another important feature afforded by the SwarmStream™ Engine is that Quality of Service (QoS) policies can be specified and the engine will work to guarentee completely smooth video playback, even over unreliable or congested networks.
