More wet weather for Suzuka race

Another unpredictable weekend of weather is expected as the Formula One circus leaps this week from Shanghai to Suzuka.
It was warm and overcast on Tuesday as some members of the travelling fraternity touched down at the Honda-owned facility, which is located on the western tip of Japan's Honshu island.
Local forecasters, however, predicted afternoon showers and - later this week - definite rain for Thursday and probably Friday.
Saturday's qualifying sessions also appear to be under the threat of wet weather, but for the race a day later, Bridgestone runners will be relieved to hear about the probable clearing of cloudy skies.
After struggling on a slippery track in China, Bridgestone is understood to have rushed an emergency specification of rain tyre from Tokyo to Suzuka.
However, to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, the Japanese company's technical manager admitted: "What we can do for Suzuka, we don't know at the moment."
Williams' Mark Webber said: "The weather is very changeable in Japan at this time of year."

Michelin: Suzuka 'one of the toughest' for tyres.
Wed 04 Oct, 5:51 PM

Michelin Formula One director Nick Shorrock says the French tyre manufacturer is confident of success in the final two Grand Prix of the season starting with one of the toughest of them all in Japan this weekend.

With Bridgestone set to be the sole tyre supplier next season, Michelin is keen to end the year on a high and will look to try and repeat its performance at Suzuka last year - when Kimi Raikkonen stole a dramatic victory on the very last lap and Michelin shod cars locked-out the top six places on the results.

However the unique nature of the Suzuka circuit, being the only figure of eight on the calendar, means it can be hard on tyres - especially through the series of high-speed bends that characterise the first half of the lap and in the fearsome 130R, one of the most daunting corners on the F1 schedule.

"Suzuka is one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar," Shorrock said. "In terms of severity it is quite similar to Silverstone - and that is where we tested to prepare tyres for this weekend's race. Suzuka's figure-of-eight configuration might even things out in terms of wear rates, but it still puts significant mechanical forces through the tyres.

"Following the Silverstone test, our six partners selected a range of compounds and we will have 10 different products available. A small section of the famous Suzuka crossover has been resurfaced since we last raced there, but I don't expect this to make a great deal of difference. The fact that we are using V8 engines, however, has allowed us to reduce the tyre rigidity by up to one step."

One thing that can't be accounted for in Japan is the weather conditions - as was seen in each of the last two seasons, with qualifying moved to Sunday in 2004 due to a typhoon and the session hit by a torrential downpour last season - but Shorrock added that Michelin had taken this into account when selecting tyres for the weekend.

"Weather conditions can be very variable in Japan at this time of year, so we had to think very carefully about the possible extremes of temperature in which the tyres might have to perform," he said. "We've taken that into account and our excellent performance in China last weekend puts us in a very positive frame of mind for the season's final two grands prix."

On-Form Schumacher Relishing Suzuka Showdown
Wed 04 Oct, 3:09 PM

A stunning victory at the Chinese Grand Prix has seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher relishing his return to one of his favourite tracks as the battle for the Formula One drivers' crown heads to Japan this weekend.

Schumacher moved ahead of reigning champion Fernando Alonso at the top of the drivers' standings for the first time this season by the slimmest of margins with his win at the weekend and he is hoping to maintain the form that has seen the Ferrari driver win five of the last seven races at Suzuka.

"With our win in Shanghai I'm looking forward even more to the race in Suzuka, which is anyway always one of the season highlights," said Schumacher,

"This track is like a dream; especially the first sector. To drive that part of the track is just fabulous: the s-curves, the rhythm, just incredible."

Suzuka circuit will host the Japanese Grand Prix for the last time before it moves next year to the Toyota-owned Fuji Speedway and the German is eagerly anticipating picking up where he left off in China.

It is a circuit that has a special place in the career of Schumacher as it was where he won his record-breaking sixth world title in 2003 when he pipped McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen to the championship.

Now he is looking to do something similar to Alonso and victory for the German plus a failure to finish in the points for the Renault ace would be enough to give Schumacher an unprecedented eighth title and the perfect send-off into impending retirement.

"Rhythm is a good keyword because we definitely want to keep our level in terms of performance," said Schumacher, who has won five of the last seven grands prix.

"We clearly made better work in the second part of the season, thus we deserved to equalise in the championship. Who could have imagined something like that three months ago?

"When you have a look at the team and how much ambition and fighting spirit they put into catching up, then there's nothing to wonder about. It's just a very special troop."

Both drivers have 116 points with two races to go, with Schumacher leading the standings by virtue of having won one race more than Alonso and the German sees the remaining races in Japan and Brazil as nothing short of a championship shoot-out.

"In Suzuka, the championship almost starts from the beginning and I think that this is the ideal starting point for all motoring enthusiasts," he said.

"We are ready for a tough and tight fight; during the last two weekends it's all about giving our best. And because of that the win in Shanghai was so important - it just gave us some extra drive."

Pana acum sunt prezenti si ei acolo sus in calificarile libere, chiar mai sus decat cei doi.

La Suzuka:
Fisichela 9 curse, 1 podium, 2 finis in puncte, 9 puncte
Massa 3 curse, o podium, 0 finis in puncte, 0 puncte

Sezonul actual:
Fisichela 16 curse,1 victorie, 4 podium, 1 pole position, 0 fastest lap, 14 finis in puncte, 63 puncte
Massa 16 curse,1 victorie, 5 podium, 1 pole position, 2 fastest lap, 11 finis in puncte, 62 puncte

Briatore slams ‘little’ Massa

Renault team boss Flavio Briatore has launched a scathing attack on Ferrari driver Felipe Massa branding him a ‘little kid,’ after claiming he blocked Fernando Alonso during qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Alonso will start Sunday's race from fifth on the grid while Massa secured pole position.

Speaking on British TV, Briatore said, "Massa is the kind of guy. He is a kid. He is a little kid. Little in every sense."

It seemed that throughout the final qualifying session Massa was running slowly for a number of laps as the defending world champion grew increasingly frustrated behind him.

Alonso even weaved from side to side at the end of the straight to let the Brazilian know he was there.

He was heard on the team radio pleading with his team saying: "I'm trying to attack. I have traffic."

The incident is a reversal of what happened in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix where Alonso was adjudged to have blocked Massa by race stewards. That resulted in a grid place penalty for the Renault driver.

Briatore said the team will be taking the incident to race director Charlie Whiting. But, in a dig at the FIA, he said he didn't believe anything would happen as it involves Ferrari.

"Today we will tell Charlie, but nothing will happen," added Briatore. "We already know what the answer will be."

"Fernando on the radio was complaining. If you are fighting with McLaren it is fine, if you fight with these guys [Ferrari] it is impossible."

Alt frustrat...

Lalusca2006.

17. Coulthard
18. Doornbos
19. Speed
20. Sato
21. Monteiro
22. Yamamoto.

In a doua parte a calificarilor, au aparut si surprizele majore.
11. Raikkonen
12. Kubica
13. de la Rosa
14. Webber
15. Liuzzi
16. Albers

Massa beats Michael to Japan pole

Red cars run riot as Renault struggle to stay in touch
07 October 2006

Ferrari, as expected, annexed the front row of the grid at Suzuka for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, with Felipe Massa just edging out Michael Schumacher to take the second pole position of his career, with 1m 29.599s to the German’s 1m 29.711s.

The presence of the two Toyotas on the second row was perhaps an indication of the Japanese team's habitual strategy on home ground, but also endorsed the superiority of Bridgestone’s tyre. Ralf Schumacher just beat Jarno Trulli, 1m 29.989s to 1m 30.034s. In both cases the gaps between the team mates may be a reflection that one has to run a lap longer than the other in the race.

Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella both closed the gap to Ferrari with sterling efforts for Renault, but 1m 30.371s and 1m 30.599s left them only fifth and sixth with a mountain to climb in the race. And as the animals came in two-by-two, Jenson Button took seventh for Honda with 1m 30.992s, ahead of Rubens Barrichello on 1m 31.478s.

Nick Heidfeld made it through from Q2 for BMW Sauber, taking ninth place with 1m 31.513s ahead of Nico Rosberg, who made full use of the Bridgestone-shod Williams-Cosworth package to complete the top 10 on 1m 31.856s.

Kimi Raikkonen’s chances of getting into Q3 evaporated when he slid wide in the Spoon Curve, leaving him 11th for McLaren on 1m 30.827s ahead of Robert Kubica, who likewise lost out in his BMW Sauber after nearly brushing the bridge wall on the exit to Degner 2. The Pole lapped in 1m 31.094s. Pedro de la Rosa failed to get his McLaren through to the final session, stopping the clocks in 1m 31.254s which was just enough to stay ahead of Williams’ Mark Webber, who was another to survive a scare at Degner 2. The Australian thus relied on 1m 31.276s for 14th.

Tonio Liuzzi did a fine job as the only one of Red Bull’s four drivers to get through Q1, and pushed his Toro Rosso to 1m 31.943s. Christijan Albers had also made it through Q1 for Spyker MF1, and will line up 16th on 1m 33.750s.

Interestingly, the fastest man in that second session was M Schumacher, in 1m 28.954s. “There is so much grip and they fly through the Esses!” the former champion said. “It’s funny when you think we are running V8s engines.”

David Coulthard was the first of the Q1 failures on 1m 32.252s for Red Bull, with team mate Robert Doornbos right behind on 1m 32.402s. Scott Speed was next up on 1m 32.867s, after an off in Spoon Curve in the Toro Rosso. Takuma Sato beat Tiago Monteiro, Super Aguri versus Spyker MF1, with 1m 33.666s to 1m 33.709s, while Sakon Yamamoto failed to get a time after setting the fastest sector one time and then half spinning and stalling his Super Aguri at Spoon.

So Ferrari start just where they wanted, and with Renault where they’d have liked them to be. “Having Alonso behind me is more important than being behind my team mate,” Schumacher grinned, a man who knows that he might just clinch a record eighth world championship title on Sunday, if things keep going his way.

Adevarul e ca Alonso a avut 2 mari ghinioane sezonul asta, in Ungari cu roata si in China.

Michael Schumacher (DNF):
"We are a great team. Our guys are the best and I have a great affection for everyone at Ferrari and am always more than satisfied in the way we work. Incidents like today's can happen and they are part of racing. You win together but you also lose together. Today we did our best, I was leading the race and then my engine broke. That's the simplest way to sum it up. That is Formula One. We can be proud of what we have achieved since Canada: we were twenty five points behind and no one could have thought we would be back in the fight for the championship, but we did it. Now we are nine points behind in the Constructors' classification and we will do all we can to win this title in Brazil. As for the Drivers,' it is lost. I don't want to head off for a race, hoping that my rival has to retire. That is not the way in which I want to win the title."

Michael Schumacher, abandon: "Suntem o echipa minunata.
