Am inteles ca in sfarsit Chan a reusit sa faca 2 triplu axel curate. E un pas inainte.

Kimmie s-a retras...nu prea mai are sanse deloc!

Abbott edges Lysacek in short at U.S. Champs
Five year Lysacek-Weir stranglehold on U.S. title may be near end

Jeremy Abbott has crashed the long-running Evan Lysacek-Johnny Weir party.

The skater from Colorado Springs delivered a near-perfect short program that earned 86.40 points, the highest total ever awarded for a short program at the U.S. Championships and some 8.14 points more than his international personal best.

"I felt nervous going out there," Abbott, 23, said. "Coming in here as the Grand Prix champion, I felt I put a lot of pressure on myself to be perfect."

Abbott's performance, to Albinoni's "Adagio," was as close to perfect as it gets. His lyrical yet intricate program opened with a superb triple flip-triple toe loop combination and gained strength from there.

"I feel like nationals has been a lot about Evan and Johnny for a long time," he said. "I felt I could break through. I've worked hard this season, and it's given me a lot of confidence."

Abbott had a breakout fall, winning the Cup of China and the ISU Grand Prix Final, something neither Lysacek nor Weir has done. He came to Cleveland as one of the favorites for the first time, a role that didn't suit him well at first.

"There's been a lot of external pressure, and I let it get to me a bit," he said. "I got back to myself and my training and started to get a lot better after that."

Tom Zakrajsek, who coaches Abbott at Colorado Springs' World Arena, looked stunned when his skater's marks came up.

"To get 46.79 points -- almost 47 points -- is really a great technical [element] score for a short program," he said. "Obviously, Evan is a great champion. He's been on the world podium twice, and he's won [the U.S. title] two times. Evan knows how to win, and Jeremy out-skated him when [Evan] skated well."

While Abbott took top honors, Lysacek wasn't far behind. The two-time defending champion kicked off the evening with an electric program to Ravel's Bolero that built excitement in its second half.

Lysacek scored higher levels for his spins and step sequences than Abbott, but his opening triple Axel gained fewer points and his program components were slightly lower. He stands in second with 83.59 points, just 2.81 off the lead.

"I think it went well," the 23-year-old said. "I said last year defending this title is the most difficult thing I go through [during] the season.

"To see such strong levels is really encouraging. I know it will hold up on the international level."

The Los Angeles-based skater said he didn't focus much on Abbott's ascension to the elite ranks.

"I sort of mind my own business as far as skating and my life in general goes," he said. "I'm making important technical and artistic improvements [in my programs]. ... This is only my third event of the season, and I'm looking toward the world championships to peak."

Former U.S. novice and junior champion Parker Pennington, whose highest finish at the U.S. Championships was sixth place in 2003, is in a surprising third place after a 76.17-point short program.

The skater, who trained in the Cleveland area under 1960 Olympic champion Carol Heiss Jenkins for 10 years, returned to her this season after leaving in 2003 to work with other coaches.

"This experience was absolutely incredible -- to be able to go out in front of my home crowd and deliver one of my best performances was surreal," said the 24-year-old Pennington, who brought the crowd to its feet with his clean performance.

"I worked really hard to get to this point, and I owe a lot of credit to my coaches. I wouldn't be sitting here today if it weren't for them."

Weir, the reigning world bronze medalist, saw his hopes for a fourth U.S. title dashed when he popped a triple Axel into a single, gaining just 0.30 points for the element. He placed seventh with 70.76 points, more than 15 points off the lead.

"The mistake I made on the triple Axel is a mistake I haven't made in quite some time," he said. "This is the first time I haven't done a clean short at nationals since 2001."

Though clearly disappointed, the skater said he looked forward to redeeming himself in the free program Sunday afternoon.

"I'm down far enough now that I have nothing to lose," he said. "I'm trained as well as I can be for the moment.

"Right now, I'm very disappointed with myself. I can't wait to get back to the hotel and cry in the shower for an hour."

Lysacek, asked whether it felt strange not to have Weir at the post-event press conference, replied, "I think we all feel for him tonight. I didn't see him skate, but I saw his scores, and I think he had a rough performance. I hope he gets a good night's sleep."

Two other skaters from Zakrajsek's stable, Brandon Mroz and Ryan Bradley, are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mroz, just 18, had a clean outing to music from Richard Strauss marked by strong jumps and solid spins. He takes 74.88 points into the long program.

"It's my first time out [at the U.S. Championships] in seniors, and I had a few doubts, but I've trained this program hard throughout the season," he said.

"Doing the Senior Grand Prix [this fall] and coming in here with a great team of coaches really helped. I knew it was my moment to shine."

Bradley, the 2007 U.S. silver medalist, missed a golden opportunity to place in the top three when he doubled an intended triple Lutz after landing a strong quad-triple combination and a triple Axel. His short earned 74.05 points.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid," Bradley, 25, said. "I did all of my hard stuff. I just learned my triple Lutz 12 years ago, so I haven't gotten it under my belt yet. It cost me big time, but that's all right. I've got a big long program coming up.

Caroline a rata echipa pt mondiale :(

Caroline Zhang improved upon her fourth-place finish last season by winning the bronze medal with a graceful program to Ave Maria, although she had an intended triple-triple downgraded as well.
"I think my program today was pretty good overall," the 16-year-old said. "I just had a little mistake on my triple flip-triple toe. I got all of the levels on my spins and spirals, so I'm happy with that."
Although disappointed with missing the world team, the California teen looked on the bright side.
"I think it will help with next year, because it will give me more time to train for the Olympic season," she said. "I hope with extra time I can rework the technique on my jumps."

Evan - incepe prost ratand 4T - cade. Apoi merge bine la triple dar am impresia ca nu i-au iesit combinatele (sau nu le-a avut in program?): A avut: 3A, ??, 3A, 3T, 3L, 3F+2T+2L, 3L, 3F Per total prestatie buna, de calitate. Total 220.10 -locul 2 intermediar.

Edit: to Iulya: Am zis ca NBC-ul sunt in urma din cauza reclamelor!

Intre timp a terminat si Pennington - slab. Cade la 3A si 3F. Face 2L+3T, 3L si inca 2 triple fara combinatii... impresia slabuta. - total 192.48

Abbott: 3L, 3F, 3A, ??, 3a+2T, 3L+2T+2T, 1L, 2A+3T (aterizare cu mana jos dar cred ca-i pune 3T). Lucrat frumos. Asteapta notele.

Edit: total 241.89 - Abbott - Campion National SUA. Locul 2: Mroz. Evan - 3. Johnny -5.

Concursul s-a terminat.

Abbott ends Lysacek-Weir domination

CLEVELAND -- The results flashed and Jeremy Abbott jumped to his feet, holding up both index fingers.

No doubt about it, Abbott's No. 1.

Abbott won his first title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Sunday, ending the five-year stranglehold that Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir have had on the top spot. It's the second major title in as many months for Abbott, who won the Grand Prix final in December.

Abbott finished with 241.89 points, more than 13 points ahead of training mate Brandon Mroz. Lysacek, winner of the last two U.S. titles, dropped to third after a surprisingly conservative and faulty program. An even bigger disappointment was Weir, who was fifth after two dismal performances and could miss worlds for the first time since 2003.

"I completely take primary ownership of my illness and the fact I wasn't prepared," said Weir, whose preparation was compromised by a severe case of the flu over the holidays. "But at the same time, I can't push myself and expect something that I know is impossible."

For Abbott, anything seems possible these days.

The U.S. junior champion in 2005, Abbott's talent was never in question. But he was often overlooked because of his inconsistency. That and the fact that everybody took a back seat to Lysacek and Weir, who have not only dominated nationals, they've been perennial medal contenders on the international stage.

But Abbott turned these nationals into his personal party. With just about everybody complaining that the new judging system has stripped skating of all of its beauty and artistry, Abbott showed that it can still be done.

And done well.

His program didn't have the most difficult jumps -- skating last, he didn't need to do the quad and he didn't take the risk -- but just as Alissa Czisny showed in winning the women's title, there's more to skating than jumps. There is heart and soul and emotions, and Abbott displayed all three.

His face was wonderfully expressive, displaying every inch of the passion, anxiety and excitement of the music. Even if you didn't recognize his music -- "Eight Seasons" -- you were swept up in the program. His footwork was spectacular, moving as lightly across the ice as a pianist's fingers dance across the keyboard.

Of course, it's easier to do when you're trying to climb rather than stay on top. Just ask Lysacek.

Lysacek has said repeatedly that defending the national title is the hardest thing he's ever had to do, and it showed on the ice. His "Rhapsody in Blue" program has great potential, especially the playful footwork toward the end that makes him look as if he's dancing in the streets in his dark blue tuxedo with a red rose on the lapel.

But he was way too tentative, trying to hold onto that title instead of win it all over again.

His very first element was a quadruple toe loop jump, but he underrotated it and crashed to the ice. He was crooked in the air on his triple salchow, though he managed to save the landing. He was off-balance on his second triple axel, too, forcing him to take a hop before doing a triple toe that was supposed to be in combination.

When he finished, he looked more relieved than happy.

Mroz was ecstatic with his finish, as he should be. Though this is his first season at the senior level, he already looks like a steely veteran.

He had the cleanest program of the day, and the most difficult. His quadruple toe loop jump was huge, he could have thrown in another turn. He did eight more triple jumps -- no small feat on a day when some guys struggled to do doubles. And while he's still young -- he just turned 18 in December -- he's already got a knack for performing.

After finishing seventh in the short program, Weir needed a fantastic performance Sunday to have a shot at the world team. Instead, he popped his very first jump, a triple axel, doubled what should have been a triple loop and fell on a triple flip. His footwork was incredibly difficult, filled with intricate steps, turns and hops, but he appeared to just be going through the motions with it.

His entire performance, in fact, was dull -- and that's really saying something for the colorful and quirky Weir.

Weir blamed his performances on his shortened preparation after his bout with the flu. He lost 8 pounds in a single day while he was sick.

"It may sound like an excuse, but you have to remember that Michael Jordan had a whole team around him," Weir said when reminded that Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to victory in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals when he was sick. "I'm a single, skinny, sparkly boy standing by myself."

Imi place televiziunea asta locala!

Dar vino, m-as bucura sa te revad.

Abbott reaches new level as U.S. men's champion
Mroz surges to silver medal; Lysacek takes bronze; Weir finishes fifth

(01/25/2009) - Even in victory, Jeremy Abbott thinks he can do a lot better.

The skater from Colorado Springs, Colo., delivered a solid performance Sunday at the 2009 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships to win the free skate and his first U.S. title with 241.89 points.

Though happy, he wasn't entirely satisfied.

"I was not extremely pleased with how I did today," Abbott, 23, said. "I had a big mistake on the triple loop, and I really had to fight for some landings. Nothing felt smooth and easy. It wasn't quite up to par with my personal best; it wasn't even close."

All week, Abbott, whose breakout 2008 Grand Prix season included winning the GP Final in December, battled nerves and the pressure of the unaccustomed role of pre-event favorite.

"I felt awful leading up to this event. I felt awful today. I felt awful on the ice," he said. "I was able to control myself and do what I had to do. I wasn't happy with my performance, but I'm learning to compete and keep mistakes to a minimum."

The stylish Abbott, who has not attempted a quad in competition since last summer, popped an intended triple loop into a single and failed to complete a triple-triple combination. His spins and step sequences gained high levels, though, and his innate elegance shone through the intricate choreography of his program to Piazzolla's "Eight Seasons," giving him the highest program components of the event by over seven points.

"I don't think the new [judging] system is a hindrance to artistry at all," Abbott said. "You really have to find what drives you as your art and stick to that and be true to that."

Two of Abbott's training mates, Brandon Mroz and Ryan Bradley, placed second and third in the free skate. Mroz captured the silver medal, and Bradley was fourth overall.

Defending champion Evan Lysacek was third, with three-time champion Johnny Weir fifth. It is the first time since 2003 that neither skater won the U.S. title.

"Overall, [the U.S.] is probably the strongest country in the entire world for men's skating," Lysacek, 23, said. "A lot [of that] has to do with Johnny and I, with that rivalry being so publicized the last few years. It's pushed not just him and me but a lot of other competitors to come up and try to steal one of the spots."

A youngster in the senior field at just 18, Mroz outshone his elders technically, opening with a gorgeous quadruple toe loop worth 10.51 points. He gained the highest technical scores but lagged far behind Abbott in the program components and ended the event with 229.70 points.

"Over the season, we took a big leap and put a lot of technically hard things in the program -- the quad, two [triple] Axels and a triple-triple in the second half. It's very demanding," Mroz said.

Abbott, Mroz and Bradley all train under the direction of Tom Zakrajsek at Colorado Springs' World Arena.

"It certainly creates a competitive atmosphere," Abbott said. "We're all really good friends; we root for each other and try to best each other regularly. I think it's a really good atmosphere, and it's helped all three of us be on the podium."

A failed quad toe, which he did not include in his programs earlier this season, helped cost Lysacek a shot at a third U.S. title.

The two-time world bronze medalist got hit by a double whammy: not only did he fall on the jump, but it was downgraded by the technical panel. Factoring in the one-point deduction for the fall, it ended up having no value.

"I think it was important to go for it," he said. "I said I would go all out for it, and I did."

Skating after the po****r Bradley, Lysacek was thrown off stride by a shower of gifts that covered the ice as he prepared to start his program. He made an uncharacteristic error on a triple Salchow and faltered on his triple Axel-triple toe combination.

"It was a strange night," he said. "Balls were bouncing everywhere. I got a little out of my rhythm."

Bradley, the 2007 U.S. silver medalist, popped a triple Salchow in an otherwise solid program. He ended with 221.40 points.

"I did the hard stuff and let my mind slip on a simple element," he said.

As usual, the 25-year-old brought the crowd to its feet with an entertaining program to Latin rhythms.

"[The crowd] is what brings me back year after year," he said. "It's an adrenaline rush, and I'm kind of an addict. I love the crowd so much, and hopefully they feel that."

Weir opened his free skate by popping a triple Axel into a single, just as he did in the short program, and reducing an intended triple loop to a double.

His fifth-place finish was his lowest since 2003, when he withdrew from the event after falling and hitting the wall during his free skate.

"It was a difficult preparation for me coming into this event," the 24-year-old said. "I was sick over Christmas, and then it was New Year's, and then all of a sudden I was on a plane to Cleveland."

During the Christmas holiday, Weir traveled from his skating base in New Jersey to South Korea, to perform with Yu-Na Kim in an exhibition to benefit children's charities. The commitment cost him dearly when he came down with a bad case of gastrointitis.

"I lost eight pounds in one day, but I showed up here," he said. "I didn't skate well, but I didn't embarrass myself. I did land some jumps."

Reminded that Michael Jordan famously led the Chicago Bulls to a playoff victory weakened by the flu, Weir had a memorable riposte: "It may sound like an excuse, but Michael Jordan has a whole team behind him, and I'm a single, skinny, sparkly boy standing in the middle of the ice."

The world bronze medalist made a clear pitch to be selected for one of the three spots available to U.S. men at the upcoming 2009 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles.

"You should fight for your place on the world team," he said. "At the same time, I'm the only American man to win three medals on the Grand Prix this season; I'm ranked fourth in the world. I hope the [selection] committee understands my circumstances coming into this championship."

They may have understood, but they did not name Weir to the team. Barring injury, Abbott, Mroz and Lysacek will go to Los Angeles, with Weir as the first alternate.

Parker Pennington, who was one of the feel-good stories on Friday after finishing third in the short program in front of a home crowd in Cleveland, had an unfortunate free skate that included two falls. The skater fell on a triple Axel in the six-minute warm-up and rolled his right ankle, requiring medical attention. He wound up placing eighth overall.
