T essa Virtue was describing how she felt after she and ice dancing partner Scott Moir won the world championship silver medal.

"I don't know if I'll ever feel like that again," she said.

Moir leaned back and whispered, "Just wait."

We can hardly wait.

The skating darlings thrilled Canadians by capturing the silver at the ripe old ages of 18 and 20. Virtue turns 19 next month.


There was a time when ice dancers didn't reach prime, or weren't allowed to win, until they were much older.

With changes to the way the sport is scored, the best performances are rewarded. Virtue and Moir have had many best performances.

Virtue from London and Moir from Ilderton were home yesterday. They were doing promotions with the Bank of Montreal, a major skating sponsor.

They'll do three performances of Stars on Ice -- Hamilton, London and Toronto -- and at Carnival 2008 at Ilderton in a Viva Las Vegas show on Saturday and Sunday.

Then it's off a few weeks.

"We're going to find some sun," Moir said. "We have to make sure out body recovers and get ready for next year. So pumped up before you go, and training is not easy, but you know what you are skating for, it's very motivating, the world championship and then you come home and get off the ice and you're tired and it's tough to get it going. But we're breaking through that."

It's been a dream year. Virtue and Moir won the silver on the heels of a first-place finish at the Four Continents competition after they had won the Canadian title.

"We didn't know what we were going to get results-wise or what was going to be given to us," Moir said. "But we knew what was there and we just wanted to go there and skate the best we could."

"We definitely knew we had a shot at the podium and that was in the back of our minds the whole time," Virtue said. "We've been training for a while and we were so prepared and our confidence was high."

They've come of age in the world of ice dancing.

These are no longer the youngsters who would nervously meet the media after they competed. They now exude the kind of confidence that world champions are made of . . . a quiet confidence off the ice when talking about their accomplishments, goals and dreams, and an assuredness in their skating that leaves little question about future successes.

They found overnight success, as the saying goes, after 11-years of hard work.

They've got it together. Skill, personality, they are accommodating with the kind of niceness you don't often see among the world's top performers.

They are also mentally tough. They know what they want to accomplish and won't allow anything around them to deter them from that goal. It's that ice-water pumping through their veins that allows them to compete with the success they do.

"We just skated for ourselves," Virtue said. "Once you get into the skating, you tune out everything. It comes with experience. It helps that we're recognized as one of the top teams, it's not only a confidence thing but motivating. We want to work even harder."

Virtue and Moir continue to be referred to as kids in large part because of what they have accomplished so quickly. But they've grown far beyond that. They are shaking the walls which have enclosed the ice dancing world.

"We want to accomplish our goals when we are young and then move on to other things," Moir said. "We don't want to skate to anyone else's timetable. We know what goals we have. No one's going to tell us we have to wait around for what we want."

There's no big secret to those goals. They are staring at them. Moir and Virtue aren't afraid to talk about them. There's the world championships and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

"We talk about our goals all the time. We talked about our daily, weekly goals, long term goals. You have to do that," Virtue said.

Talking about where they are heading helps them.

"It's great to draw on when you have a tough day," Moir said.

As is our wont as a nation, come the Olympic year, the pressure on Moir and Virtue will be enormous. That's the way it is for Canadian athletes since we have so few of them that have a chance of gold and even fewer of them who respond to the pressure.

Moir and Virtue have the kind of temperament where pressure becomes a force they refuse to give into.

"This is the one line we always say," Moir said. "The expectations that everybody else has for us, is nowhere close to the expectations we have of ourselves. I think we have great opportunity the next three years and we're going to do everything we can to be on that podium. We'll see what happens. But we're going to have a lot of fun the next couple of years of our lives."

Canada's top pair will miss first Grand Prix assignment

Very few people, apparently. And those that did must be very good at keeping big news under their hats.

That's why it came as such a surprise when Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Canada's world ice dance silver medalists, announced their withdrawal from next week's HomeSense Skate Canada International.

It seems Virtue has not been on the ice since she underwent surgery in mid-September to repair painful injuries in her shins. After suffering with the condition called chronic exertional compartment syndrome for almost a year, she could no longer avoid seeking permanent relief from the pain which had intensified over the summer. "I'm so pleased and so happy that it was something that was fixable. The surgery should be great and I should be back on the ice in no time, so I'm lucky in that sense," Virtue said in a telephone interview with icenetwork.com.

"It should be all fixed now. They just cut right through the fascia all the way down my leg around the muscles. Now my muscles should be able to expand and I should be able to build myself up and get going again," she added, noting that today was her first physiotherapy session.

The surgery came right after the couple had created such a buzz at the Canadian team's high performance camp in Vancouver with their new free dance set to music by English rock band Pink Floyd. What wasn't reported at the time, however, was that Virtue and Moir were capable of performing the routine only in short sections rather than running through the entire routine at once, because of Virtue's painful condition.

The couple's coach Marina Zoueva said they had originally hoped Virtue could have recovered in time to compete at the Grand Prix event in Ottawa. In the end, they decided it was best not to rush her return to the ice, Zoueva said, citing Russian ice dancer Maxim Shabalin's over-anxiousness to return to the ice last season which ultimately forced him and partner Oksana Domnina out of the World Championships.

Moir has continued to train on his own, Zoueva reported, saying that they still hope to be able to compete at the last event in the Grand Prix series -- NHK Trophy in Tokyo. Virtue isn't making any promises before she has a chance to evaluate how quickly she recovers.

"If we're in top shape by then [end of November] and we feel we can compete, then we'll do our best to be there [in Tokyo]. It's too bad we had to miss Skate Canada. We're both really disappointed, but it comes with the territory of being an athlete, and we both have to stay positive. NHK is in the back of our minds, but I don't want to rush it. I want to make sure I'm completely healed, but it's definitely something I'll be pushing for."

Virtue's injury is believed to have been caused by new skate boots she got about a year ago. She has since changed boots, but the damage was done.

"It got to the point that I couldn't do nearly as much skating as I wanted to. I know I wouldn't have been able to complete the season without the surgery so better this year than next year and the timing of it is something I'll have to deal with," Virtue said.

Zoueva will still make the trip to Skate Canada as coach to U.S. contenders Meryl Davis and Charlie White and part-time coach of Ryan Bradley. Virtue has not yet decided if she will make the relatively short trip to Ottawa from her home in London.

Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of the Arctic Figure Skating Club in Canton showed their determination in March when they won the silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in just their second season as a senior team.



For the next few weeks, though, the reigning Canadian champs will have to embrace another trait: patience.

Virtue, 19, is home in London, Ontario, recovering from surgery to repair a painful condition in her shins called chronic external compartment syndrome. The team has withdrawn from Skate Canada -- next week's second ISU Grand Prix event of the season -- and Moir said Friday that it's possible the team will cancel its trip next month to Japan for the NHK Trophy if Virtue isn't fully recovered.

"January is our main focus right now," he said.

Virtue said her condition was the result of overtraining. She said she tried to skate through the pain, but it only worsened.

"My shins bothered me a lot last year, but in the summer it intensified," Virtue said by phone from London, where she began physiotherapy Wednesday. "Lucky for me, I have something that's fixable. I need to take time and make sure I'm healthy. I'm really positive about it -- better this year then next year."

Although Virtue underwent surgery several weeks ago, the skaters kept mum until they were comfortable talking about it and were certain that Virtue would make a full recovery, Moir said.

Virtue and Moir, along with U.S. silver medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White, are the top-two ice-dance teams in Canton since the departure last spring of 2006 Olympic silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto to Pennsylvania.

Virtue and Moir hope to be ready to defend their title at their national championships Jan. 13-18 in Saskatoon. The team, which has been training with coaches Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva since 2004, is expected to contend for an Olympic medal at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Grand Prix season began Friday at Skate America in Everett, Wash. Several local skaters will compete next week at Skate Canada in Ottawa, including ice dancers Davis and White, and Jennifer Wester and Daniil Barantsev of the Detroit SC, and ladies singles skater Alissa Czisny of the Detroit SC.

Those were just four of the topics in an eclectic mix of subjects that Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir chatted about Thursday as they contemplated their comeback at the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships next week in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Canada's world ice dancing silver medalists were forced to pull out of Grand Prix Series this past fall after Virtue underwent surgery in early October to repair painful injuries in both shins. The condition, called chronic exertional compartment syndrome, had been hampering her training for almost a year. When the pain intensified over the summer, Virtue knew she had no choice but to seek relief. The surgery involved cutting the overly tight sheath around the muscles to allow them to expand normally when she skates.

"Obviously, our fall wasn't how we planned it to go. We hit a couple of little speed bumps here, but now I think we're just excited to get to nationals and be back training again. Everything seems to be going really well, so we're just pumped for next week," said the 21-year-old Moir.

Virtue, 19, conceded she will likely have more butterflies than usual when they step on the ice in Saskatoon, because they have not been able to put the usual mileage on their programs.

"Coming back from an injury like this, it's natural to be apprehensive and a little bit nervous, but it's really comforting to know [Scott] will be by my side," Virtue said, noting that she is close to 100 percent recovered.

Despite the setback and the challenge of making their season debut in January, the young couple has not altered its expectations for the big events still to come.

"Onward and upward" is how Moir put it, confirming their intention to be in the fight for the world title in March in Los Angeles.

While Virtue attended to her recovery through physiotherapy, Moir continued to train on his own through October and November. In early December, Virtue returned to the ice for short periods of time, gradually increasing the length of their training sessions to about an hour and a half each day. That is still only about half the hours the couple would usually log.

Reflecting on the time he spent on the ice alone and the hours Virtue put into her recovery off-ice, Moir said, "There was no lack of motivation for either of us. The clock is ticking [to the 2010 Olympics]. Vancouver is always in the back of our minds, so it was a little bit of a different start to the season.

"But it was a blessing in disguise at the same time, because sometimes you forget how much you appreciate your skating partner or how much fun it is to ice dance with somebody until it's not there for a little while. We're definitely rejuvenated and really excited."

Virtue added with a chuckle, "You should all see Scott do our programs by himself, because it's fabulous ... For me, it was tough [getting back to training] just knowing how much further I needed to go, not only because I needed to get back to the level I was, but because Scott had improved so much because he was working so hard. So, I really had to ramp it up."

Moir revealed that his coaches, Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband, were very creative in helping him simulate having a partner in his arms while he was training.

"A lot of my [strength] training was done off-ice as well, because I was not lifting Tessa every day. So, I was substituting for that with various items on the ice and off. It was quite interesting," he chuckled, noting a sand bag and core-strengthening balls filled in for Virtue on various occasions.

Virtue and Moir's free dance is set to music by the famous English rock band, Pink Floyd. French world champions Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder, coincidentally, made the same musical choice.

"We seem to be interpreting it very differently, so I think it will add some excitement," Virtue said, looking ahead to the couples' expected meeting at the 2009 World Championships in March.

"It was kind of mixed emotions," said Moir about the prospect of dueling Pink Floyd programs. "Obviously, you don't want to skate to the same music as anyone else. It was kind of interesting when both teams went in such different direction and ended up at the same music, which is very uncommon."

Virtue and Moir's season debut will take place in the building where they made their Canadian championships debut in 2003. That year, the youngsters (then just 13 and 15 years old) finished seventh in the junior ice dancing event.

Getting her belly button pierced is one of the things Virtue recalls most about that week six years ago.

"I'm just trying to think of something else crazy I can do in Saskatoon," she said, laughing.

It is unlikely any other Canadian couple will come close to challenging Virtue and Moir for the national title. With Canada having only two berths for ice dancers at the 2009 Worlds, Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier and Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje will likely be the ones battling for the second ticket to Los Angeles.

Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir put themselves in position for a second straight Four Continents ice dancing title with a stellar original dance Thursday in Vancouver.

Virtue, from London, Ont., and Moir, from Ilderton, Ont., scored 60.90 points with their Charleston routine, giving them a total of 97.30 points heading into Friday's free dance final.

"I think we're pleased. We're very happy," Moir said.

American champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who train together with Virtue and Moir in Canton, Mich., scored 60.42 to remain in second with a score of 95.65, and Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates of the U.S. are third, with 59.48 points for a total of 90.89.

Vanessa Crone of Aurora, Ont., and Paul Poirier of Unionville, Ont., are fourth, scoring 56.36 points with their Ragtime performance for 88.79 points. Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., sit fifth, earning a season's best 53.33 points for a total of 83.95.

Virtue and Moir, who successfully defended their Canadian championship last month in Saskatoon, are making their season debut against international competition just six weeks before next month's world championships in Los Angeles.

They skipped the Grand Prix season in the fall and early winter because Virtue was recovering from surgery to relieve pain in her shins brought on by chronic exertional compartment syndrome, a condition that stems from overtraining.

The 19-year-old is still not fully recovered, and planned to spend Thursday evening icing and receiving acupuncture.

"It's definitely not the same pain I felt before the surgery, it's just the after-effects," Virtue said. "I'm putting a lot of pressure on them now but it's exciting that soon I'll be skating without that pain, It's not that bad.

"Sometimes, footwork is tough because of the deep edges and knee bends, but we're trained so it was more just fun to be out there and adrenalin really helps so I didn't really even notice."

Virtue and Moir won the Four Continents last year in South Korea, then went on to take silver at the world championships in Sweden.

Virtue, Moir say winning worlds is "a great possibility"
Canada's reigning world silver medalists are excited heading to L.A.

(03/18/2009) - Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir head to next week's world championships in Los Angeles with top-dog status, following the withdrawal of the defending world champions, France's Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder. Canada's reigning world silver medalists, however, said they don't feel like they have a target on their backs.

Virtue, who is still recovering from the surgery she underwent on her legs early last fall, noted, "It's tough to say where we rank [globally], and being out with an injury is a tough thing. Coming back, you're never sure where you might fit in."

Moir said, "I don't know if I feel like we're the team to beat. There's a lot of good teams at the top of the world. I think it's going to be a great competition next week."

He added, "We kind of have to keep tunnel vision and worry about our skating and looking to go and skate our best and, hopefully, get some great results."

Despite their abbreviated season, Moir said that ending up on top of the podium at the Staples Center is still "a great possibility."

"We're actually sad the Pink Floyds didn't go head-to-head this year," Moir noted, referring to the fact that Delobel and Schoenfelder had also chosen the unorthodox music selection for their free dance. "It's always fun to go to a competition and know everyone is at their best. It seems that hasn't been the case for a couple of top teams this year, but obviously we wish her [Delobel] a speedy recovery and look forward to competing against them next year."

Virtue and Moir missed the 2008 Grand Prix Series after she sought relief from the debilitating pain in her legs early in the fall. When they returned to competition in January, they easily defended their Canadian title and then claimed silver at the ISU Four Continents Championships, just behind their Michigan training mates, Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

Virtue reported, "My shins are feeling much better. We've been training really well. Things are feeling really strong, and we've definitely made leaps and bounds and huge improvements since Four Continents."

Virtue said she has learned a lot about pain management through her ongoing recovery. Pain-wise, she said, her down days are not nearly as bad as they were previously, and the ups are even better.

"This has certainly been our toughest season so far. It's so cliché to say it makes us stronger, but it's really true. We've learned so much about each other, about our partnership, that this [competition] will mean a lot. Both competitions we've competed in so far have been huge milestones. Just to get through those knowing we can do it with such little training and under the circumstances, I think it sets us up really well for anything else that might come our way," Virtue suggested.

Moir said that the training time since Four Continents has allowed them to gain more power and strength in their programs.

"I think that we're starting to skate the programs and skate a lot more like you've come to know Tessa and Scott skate -- really loving every moment," he said.

Moir described these world championships preceding the 2010 Olympic Games as "huge."

"Worlds at any time is huge, and this will be only our third world championship, so it's very exciting for us to be competing with the best skaters in the world... . I think it really sets the stage for next season, so we're going to be going to L.A. and be ready for three strong performances."

Virtue said there will be "a little more pressure and extra butterflies" competing at these pre-Olympic worlds, but she believes it will be a good experience for them to learn how to deal with such an intense competitive environment.

"We're coming in aggressively and optimistic about the results of how things might go, and we're definitely just going to attack everything," she said.

antrenamentele de la gala cm 2008 au fost geniale. antrenoarea lui kris b a fost cea cu ideea pt gala. iar baietii si patinajul sincron si panglicile roz au facut deliciul celor cativa spectatori veniti acolo. anul asta cand ma uitam la gala numai la asta ma gandeam, oare cat de fun trebuie sa fii fost la repetitii. iar scott a fost unul dintre cei mai amuzanti.

Pentru fanii celor doi care ar dori sa le vada SD-ul din alt unghi. Este o filmare cu videocamera personala. Vazandu-le dansul mai de aproape, cred ca ar mai fi fost lucruri de imbunatatit si aici, dar linia de pasi mediana este un vis.

Cu exceptia situatiei in care el sau ea s-a indragostit de altcineva, cum s-a intamplat in trecut cu Ilia Averbukh care a parasit-o pe Anissina pentru Lobacheva.

Foarte bine fac Marina si Igor, coregrafiile de la aceste concursuri pot fi sursa de inspiratie. Vad ca si AnnaTrebunskaya s-a implicat in patinaj, poate Evan i-a sugerat si i-a deschis niste usi.

Traco, dar n-am spus-o ca pe ceva negativ, dimpotriva, cred ca asa se lucreaza profesionist cand este vorba despre ballroom dance si alte dansuri care au un specific anume. De exemplu, fratii Shibutani vor include in FD-ul lor si partea numita Chatanooga Choo Choo - se gaseste pe youtube - unde vor face pasi de step. Pai cine sa le arate lor pasii de step daca nu un profesionist pentru ca n-am auzit ca Marina sau Igor sa stie sa danseze step.:)) Cu atat mai mult cu cat dansul se invata mai intai pe uscat si dupa aceea se pune pe gheata de catre coregrafii de patinaj.

La fel, Elena si Nikita isi vor face FD-ul pe Ave Maria aranjament modern si se presupune ca va fi o versiune hip-hop fiindca unii au informatia ca cei doi ar fi lucrat cu coregrafi de pe Broadway pentru stilul hip-hop. Absolut normal avand in vedere ca Morozov nu este cunoscut ca specialist al hip-hopului.:)) Iar influentele din concursurile de dans pe parchet sau diverse spectacole de dans sunt inevitabile.

Cat despre Anna Trebunskaya, nu ai nevoie de Lysacek ca sa ajungi la ea sau la alti coregrafi/dansatori de acest gen, iti trebuie pur si simplu bani:)). Da, dansul pe gheata a devenit foarte costisitor.

Cu programele astea doua, i-au lastat cu gura cascata la Mondiale pe cei de la British Eurosport. Pentru un cuplu atat de tanar, Tangoul este exceptional, ei au atitudine de tango in dans, iar Scott ai zice ca e de provenienta latina.

Executiile tehnice nu sunt perfecte, insa in ambele cazuri exprima foarte bine tema si spiritul dansului.

Am observat ca Volosozhar/Trankov isi fac intrarea in scena a la Virtue/Moir - Tatiana e o mare fana, poate si Trankov, insa pe ea am auzit-o laudandu-i pe cei doi intr-un interviu comun cu Trankov dupa CM de la Moscova. Scott are un fel al sau de a prezenta fata cand intra pe gheata - cel putin eu nu l-am vazut la alti baieti din grupul Zueva/Shpilband, deci presupun ca asa ii vine lui sa faca. Daca o sa revezi de exemplu CD-ul lor de la Vancouver, o sa intelegi la ce ma refer.

La Finlandia Trophy a fost si Jana Khokhlova care zice ca a mers in Finlanda ca simplu turist, intamplator in aceeasi perioada in care s-a tinut concursul, si a profitat de ocazie ca sa dea o fuga sa-i revada pe "copii" si pe Marina, ca i se facuse dor de ei. Si daca tot s-a intalnit cu Marina, au vorbit si ''business'', adica Jana a imbinat placutul cu utilul. Marina i-a dat toate asigurarile ca o considera in continuare eleva ei si ca o va antrena din nou cu cea mai mare placere daca isi gaseste partener. Jana insa nu se grabeste, asteapta rezultatele de la Grand Prix-uri ca sa ia o decizie. Poate asta are legatura cu zvonurile care circula, conform carora ar fi pus ochii pe Katsalapov. Vom vedea.

Unii spun ca Tessa si Scott vorbesc in acest videoclip ca si cum intentioneaza sa se intoarca in concursuri. Eu nu stiu ce sa spun, cei doi sunt cam prea sibilinici pentru capacitatea mea de a citi printre randuri. V/M au declarat acum cateva saptamani ca trebuie sa ia o decizie in privinta revenirii, si cat mai repede fiindca timpul zboara, asa ca, probabil, vom afla raspunsul la Nationalele Canadei unde presupun ca V/M vor veni ca spectatori. Aici invata un program de spectacol. Pe 28 decembrie, daca nu ma insel, vor patina in Japonia la Medallists on Ice.

Ma bucur sa-i vad lucrand cu Marie-France si David. Trebuie sa spun ca programele pe care le coregrafiaza Dubreuil mie mi se par foarte asemanatoare intre ele si piesele musicale folosite parca sunt toate luate de pe acelasi CD, dar, sub aspect conceptual, coregrafiile ei se apropie foarte mult de ceea ce vreau sa vad in dansul pe gheata. Cat despre David, el n-a mai creat nimic memorabil - sigur, dupa parerea mea - in ultimii ani la probele individuale, dar la proba de dans a coregrafiat foarte putin de-a lungul anilor, asa ca ma astept sa vina cu o nota de prospetime si originalitate (vezi programul Surviving Picasso al lui Hurtado/Diaz). Asta pentru situatia in care V/M s-ar intoarce in competitii. Adica presupun ca ar dori sa lucreze cu ei daca fac click.

Nu stiu daca V/M vor mai reusi sa castige competitii majore fie si pentru faptul ca dupa fiecare Olimpiada se ridica o noua generatie de patinatori, iar arbitrii vor sa-i rasplateasca si pe ei pentru talent si staruinta, cum e si firesc. Pe mine rezultatele ma intereseaza prea putin in ce-i priveste, cred ca au deja un palmares de care pot sa fie mandri. Ma bucur ca revin findca acesti tineri stiu realmente sa danseze.

Nu sunt o fana a etalarii exacerbate a emotiilor cum ar fi miscari bruste ale capului si corpului ca sa indici chinurile sufletesti prin care treci si cred ca nici ei nu se simt 100% confortabil pe acest stil. Dar sa vedem cu ce vor veni in competitii.

In spectacol au mai patinat Kurt Browning, Javier Fernandez (normal;)), Nam Nguyen, Ashley Wagner, Moore-Towers/Marinaro, Gilles/Poirier, Kaetlyn Osmond, Jeffrey Buttle. Formidabil ce mult s-a dezvoltat patinajul lui Fernandez si incredibil in ce forma extraordinara este Kurt la 48 de ani.
