European champion Carolina Kostner of Italy took the lead in the women's event at the World Championships, winning the short program despite blowing the landing on her triple lutz jump.

Kostner, 20, earned a personal best score of 64.28 points for a crowd-pleasing skate to The Doors' Riders on the Storm.

"I was hoping when I finished that I would be first but I made one mistake and I thought I might be second, but I'm really pleased with my performance and happy," she said.

Japan's Mao Asada, 17, winner of the Four Continents trophy last month and silver medallist at last year's Worlds, stood second going into Thursday's final skate after a near-faultless performance that earned her 64.10, her best score this season.

Compatriot Yukari Nakano, 22, turned in a lithe and graceful skate to Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu, finishing third with 61.10.

Finland's Kiira Korpi wowed her Nordic neighbours with a crowd-pleasing performance to Triunfal by Astor Piazzolla that earned her a seasonal-best score of 60.58 and fourth place.

Korea's Kim Yu-na, who said earlier this week that she still was not back to her best after recovering from an injury that kept her out of the Four Continents, was back in fifth after a fall on a triple lutz jump.

"I felt pain from my earlier [hip and back] injury when I did the triple-triple combination and then tried to do the lutz.

"That is why I fell.

"I am not so happy about the scores and I am unsatisfied because of the fall."

Kim is coached by Canadian skating great Brian Orser.

Defending champion Miki Ando of Japan was back in eighth place after a below-par performance.

Preaubert says he's fit to compete
French bronze medalist practices well despite injury

(03/19/2008) - Just three weeks ago, Alban Préaubert was off the ice, resting his injured back, and he was still uncertain as to whether or not he'd be able to participate in the 2008 ISU World Figure Skating Championships this week.

Now, with the benefit of some medical injections, he's practicing in Gothenburg.

"I had a back injury, so it was difficult to prepare [for worlds]," Préaubert said at the men's short program draw Wednesday.

"I had to stop skating for one week. I had to have an injection in my back, and I could not train with the pain. It has not been easy, but I really wanted to come here."

The French bronze medalist, who placed 11th at the 2007 World Championships in Tokyo, joins defending world champion Brian Joubert and French silver medalist Yannick Ponsero on the French men's team.

Préaubert stressed that he would not have entered the event if he had not thought he could compete well.

"I am able to do good things and skate good programs," said the 22-year-old. "Otherwise, my substitute, Kim Lucine, would have come. I would have been a good sportsman about the situation.

"My triple Axel is OK; my triple-triple [combinations] are very good. When I do run-throughs of my programs, I am not too tired."

The skater comes to worlds armed with a new short program, one that his coach, Annick Dumont, together with an off-ice dance teacher, choreographed to Gary Moore's "Parisian Walkways."

"I like this new program very much," said Préaubert. "We decided to make the change just after Europeans. It is in a different style, more romantic, more in the way [to maximize points] in the judging system."

The Frenchman placed a disappointing 11th at the 2008 European Championships this January; he had been sixth the previous season. According to Dumont, many judges and officials did not approve of his rather eccentric short program, choreographed last summer by Nikolai Morozov to music from the soundtrack of The Addams Family.

Préaubert had hoped to show his "Parisian Walkways" program at the recent AEGON Challenge Cup in The Hague, but he decided against testing his back that soon.

"I was off the ice the week before that competition, so I preferred to train quietly in serenity at home," he explained.

"I was not ready then, but I feel ready now."

Savchenko, Szolkowy win pairs world title
Germans return to top of podium for first time since '97

By Lynn Rutherford, special to icenetwork.com
(03/19/2008) - For the first time since 2001, the team atop the world pairs podium was not from China or Russia. Instead, Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the gold medal at the 2008 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. For the European champions, it was their first world championship.

In second place after the short program, Savchenko and Szolkowy moved up to take the gold with a flawed but uniquely innovative and challenging free skate that earned 130.86 points, giving them 202.86 overall.

The gold was also the first world championship for Germany since Savchenko and Szolkowy's coach, Ingo Steuer, won the pairs title in 1997 with Mandy Wötzel.

"I hope this victory will mean a lot to Germany, both to the country and to figure skating there," Szolkowy said.

It was not a pretty win. After opening with a big throw triple flip, they bobbled the landings on a triple toe-triple toe sequence before recovering with a strong triple twist. Later in the program, Szolkowy fell on a triple Salchow, causing a one-point deduction.

Superior choreography and transitions, as well as seven Level 4 elements -- including three lifts -- gained them the title.

"After each competition, we worked on our levels," Savchenko said. "Ingo also always tried to make us get Level 4 for everything."

For the 24-year-old Savchenko, who was born in Kiev, it has been a long, hard road. Originally, she competed for the Ukraine, partnering with Stanislav Morozov to win the junior world title in 2000. After the partnership with Morozov dissolved, she she moved to Germany, upon Steuer's recommendation, to tryout with Szolkowy. They've been together ever since.

"It has been a dream for me to come to Germany, and now it is just a wonderful feeling to have achieved what I have dreamed about," she said.

Reigning Olympic silver medalists Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang of China, who led by 2.36 points over the Germans after the short program, settled for the silver medal after skating a flawed free program of their own. They have now been the runners-up at the world championships for three years in a row.

The Chinese, too, fumbled side-by-side jumps, with Dan singling the double Axel portion of a sequence with a triple toe. They recovered with their usual soaring triple twist and two huge throw triples, but Dan put a hand down on a triple Salchow.

The couple earned 123.46 points, placing third in the free skate and giving them 197.82 overall, more than five points behind the gold medalists.

"We made mistakes on two of our jumps," Dan said. "We really regret that we were not able to skate our best tonight."

The Chinese skaters may have been affected by an injury to Hao, who underwent surgery to remove an infected carbuncle on his left thigh two weeks before Gothenburg. After the free skate, he immediately sought medical attention.

"Of course [the injury] was a little bit of a factor for the long program," Hao said. "We feel a little bit tired in the second part, and our speed was a little bit lower."

Canadian silver medalists Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison won the bronze, the first time a Canadian pair has been on the world podium since Jamie Salé and David Pelletier won in 2001.

Their free skate, skated to "The Blower's Daughter" and choreographed by David Wilson, was the cleanest, most emotionally stirring performance of the event. Although they did not have a triple twist -- settling for a Level 2 double worth 4.14 points -- they showed strong side-by-side triple Salchows, as well as double Axels. Seven of their elements gained Level 4 from the technical panel, helping them place second in the long program with 124.12 points. Overall, they earned 192.78 points, shattering their previous personal best.

It represented a strong comeback from their frightening accident at the 2007 Four Continents, when Davison's blade struck Dubé's cheek during side-by-side camel spins. This comeback actually started in October when the couple won gold at Skate America. The season did not continue with the same success, reaching its nadir at the Canadian championships in January, where they were unable to defend their title after coming unglued in the short program. Their bronze-medal finish in Sweden, therefore, symbolized their return to top form.

"During the performance, I said, 'We just need to stay calm and take our time,'" Davison explained. "Our coach [Annie Barabé] told us, 'Skate from your hearts, but stay cold in your heads.'"

Russian champions Yuko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov were fourth with 191.33 points.

Skating to music from Love Story, the couple opened with a rare throw quadruple Salchow, gaining 7.89 points. However, they fumbled a triple toe-triple toe sequence and made several other key mistakes, dropping a spot after their third-place short program.

2006 world champions Qing Pang and Jian Tong of China, who won the 2008 Four Continents Championships in February, had several of the jumps in their free skate downgraded by the technical panel. They earned 118.91 points for their program, putting them fifth overall with 186.78.

The two U.S. pairs competing in Gothenburg didn't come away with medals, but both achieved goals of their own.

U.S. silver medalists Rena Inoue and John Baldwin, who competed at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships with just two weeks preparation, re-affirmed their decision to remain in the eligible ranks, placing eighth in the free skate after a 10th-place short program.

"We're leaving here with a tremendous sense of satisfaction," the 34-year-old Baldwin said. "Doing those shows in Europe and Japan last summer and fall gained us a ton of performance experience; the fans just love Rena in Japan, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

"But I like competition best -- putting it all out there on the line and taking chances is scary. We really wanted to challenge ourselves and see if we could do it, and we did."

The couple, who won the U.S. title in 2004 and 2006, opened strong with side-by-side triple toe loops, a solid double twist and double Axel-double toe combos. Although Inoue fell on the landing of their signature move, a throw triple Axel, she nailed a throw triple loop later in the program.

"I'm so glad we came here," the 31-year-old Inoue said. "At first, we thought it would be impossible to do the rest of the season with just two weeks training in January. I told Johnny, 'I just hope we don't embarrass ourselves.'"

Inoue and Baldwin, who became engaged on the ice after their free skate at the U.S. championships, now plan another round of shows in Japan before returning to their home in Los Angeles to begin training for the 2009 Grand Prix season. They have other plans too: Baldwin revealed they are planning a summer wedding and hope to become parents in the not-so-distant future. They also do not rule out competing for a spot at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

"We're still here competing at our ages, against all these younger athletes," Baldwin said. "I think we're doing it pretty well too."

U.S. bronze medalists Brooke Castile and Ben Okolski, who won the U.S. title last season, missed out on their fall Grand Prix events due to Castile's injury. In their free skate here, they mis-timed the landing of their triple twist and had trouble on side-by-side jumps. They recovered with two strong throw triples though.

"We made a lot of little mistakes on stuff we don't ever miss in practice," the 21-year-old Castile said. "This is important experience for us. We've only ever done one senior Grand Prix season, and going all out, fighting and completing this season will help us in the future."

"I don't think we've had enough experience to compete well against all of these top-level teams, so this event was valuable," the 23-year-old Okolski added. "We'll be more comfortable next time."

Joubert says it's a three man race at worlds
French skater says it's between him, Takahashi and Lambiel for title

03/20/2008) - Brian Joubert told the press on Thursday that he is ready to pull out the quads and defend his title.

Saying he feels no ill effects from his bout with an energy-sapping virus that compromised his training for the 2008 European Championships this January, the Frenchman looked fit, rested and at a healthy weight.

"I have just arrived here yesterday," he said. "I had a very good warm-up [practice], and I am very confident.

"My health is great. I feel very good; I feel strong. Since Europeans, I have worked my free program with three quads -- two quad toes and one quad Salchow. I know I am ready to do it, and I can do it. Now, I will see after the short program if I have to do one quad, two quads or three quads to win."

Unlike rival Stéphane Lambiel, who talked yesterday of his dissatisfaction with ice conditions here in Gothenburg, Joubert shrugged off concerns about the event's practice schedule.

"I was a little bit surprised, because I thought I [would have] a practice before the short program, maybe Friday morning, in the main arena, but I won't," he said.

"For me, it is not a big problem, because the [two] rinks are the same size, and I heard the quality of the ice is very similar."

Gothenburg caps a difficult season for the skater, who has struggled to find his form over his past several competitions.

After winning Skate Canada in November despite a disappointing free program, Joubert developed a resistant virus. Forced to withdraw from his country's signature Grand Prix, the Trophée Eric Bompard, he did not qualify for the ISU Grand Prix Final in December.

Joubert returned in time to win his nationals, but at the '08 Europeans in Zagreb, he placed third behind Tomas Verner and Stephane Lambiel.

"In November, I had a virus but I didn't know what it was, because there is no name for it," he said. "I just know I was very tired. I couldn't skate more than 20 minutes in practice; I couldn't do my second Grand Prix, and I was late and couldn't be ready for Europeans.

"Last season was great; everything was perfect. This season is very interesting for me. I need this kind of season to get ready for 2010. But I love to skate, and that is why I am fighting, and I will fight for this competition."

Joubert's fourth-place free skate at Europeans was a particular disappointment. He turned out of an opening quad toe loop, put a hand down on his first triple Axel and fell on his second triple Axel attempt.

"After Zagreb, we made some changes in both routines," he said. "I worked a lot with [my coach] Jean-Christophe Simond in my hometown of Poitiers. I am ready to compete, and I want to retain my world title.

"I've done some changes in the short program, in the order of the elements. I had been doing the quad [toe] combo, then triple Lutz, and then triple Axel. Here, I am going to do combination, triple Axel, and then triple Lutz. For the long program, I have also put the Axel [earlier], and we have changed the way I do the footwork."

Joubert made another change, this one forced by more stringent rules concerning the sport's toe pick-assisted jumps, the flip and the Lutz.

The Frenchman generally executes his flip take-off on an incorrect outside edge. Beginning this season, this is now designated by an "e" on the judge's scoring detail, and a negative Grade of Execution is automatically assessed.

"You know I did [a triple flip] at Europeans, and it was okay," Joubert said, echoing the concerns of many skaters and coaches about inconsistent technical callers.

"I learned the triple flip like this, and last season I was world champion with this triple flip. So I find a solution -- I won't put the jump in my free program. I will do two triple Lutzes in my free program, and that's it.

"I am still working on this jump. Before, I worked a quad flip. It was a goal, and now, with the deduction, it is difficult for me."

Although confident, Joubert acknowledged there are other skaters who could snatch away his crown.

"I think it's going to be very difficult, like every world championship, because there are three skaters who can win the world title -- Stéphane Lambiel, Daisuke [Takahashi] and me," he said, later discounting Verner by repeating, "I think it is between Daisuke, me and Stéphane Lambiel."

At the end of the press conference, Joubert responded to a question about Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko's vow to return to eligible competition by aiming a few shots at his old rival.

"I saw him in a show in Torino in October, and when I saw him, I told myself he will not come back," he said.

"Technically, it was very bad, and physically he [had] gained weight. I think it will be very difficult [for him to return], but maybe it would be very interesting for the audience. We will see."

FSkate: Buttle on top after men's short programme

GOTHENBURG, Sweden (AFP) — Canada's Jeffrey Buttle closed in on his first world title after leading the men's short programme at the world figure skating championships here on Friday.

Buttle, the 2006 Olympic bronze medallist, is ahead of American Johnny Weir and Japanese favourite Daisuke Takahashi going into Saturday's free skating final.

The 25-year-old, silver medallist in 2005, scored 82.10 points with Weir achieving 80.79 and Takahashi 80.40.

"I feel like I am in the same position as last year except that I am way more prepared and consistent so I'm gonna go out there tomorrow more positive, more confident than last year," said Buttle, who finished just sixth last year.

The battle for the gold looks set to be tough with just three points separating the top five.

European champion Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic is sitting in fourth position with Switzerland's Stephane Lambiel, world champion in 2005 and 2006, in fifth place.

Defending champion Brian Joubert of France is trailing in sixth after falling on a triple lutz. He scored 77.75.

Joubert lost two points for the fall and another for words sung to the music of his programme 'All for you' by Sebastien Damiani, which is against International Skating Union (ISU) rules.

The French federation are appealing this penalty as the skater was not deducted points for this reason in previous competitions.

"I don't quite understand this. I had the same music the whole season and I never got a deduction," said Joubert.

But he remained optimistic despite not being among the favourites after a season hit by health problems.

"It isn't a problem since I am not so far away. I will try to put tree quads in my free programme, I have to give it everything I have," added Joubert.

Buttle gave a faultless performance to Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla which included a triple-triple combination, as did Weir, demonstrating another style, in his presentation of Alexei Rybnikov's Yunona and Avos.

Takahashi, bidding to become the first Japanese man to win gold after taking silver last year, touched down on his triple axel during his hip-hop version of Swan Lake.

"The performance was not bad, but I missed the Axel," said Takahashi, who admitted he felt the pressure of being favourite.

"I don't know what happened, but I was nervous today. (Tomorrow) I want to do a perfect and more exciting programme."

Grand Prix final winner Lambiel, the Olympic silver medallist, presented a Flamenco routine Carne Cruda by Fernando Egozcue, but struggled on his triple axel and touched the ice with his hand on his quad-triple combination.
