<p><strong>Das deutsche Fed-Cup-Team ist nach einjähriger Zugehörigkeit zur Weltspitze des Tennis wieder in die Zweitklassigkeit abgestiegen.</strong> Die Mannschaft von Teamchefin Barbara Rittner, die ohne ihre verletzte Spitzenspielerin Anna-Lena Grönefeld (Nordhorn) und die aus persönlichen Gründen nicht zur Verfügung stehenden Julia Schruff (Augsburg) und Martina Müller (Hannover) antrat, hatte im Playoff gegen China in Peking erwartungsgemäß keine Chance und lag bereits vor den abschließenden beiden Matches aussichtslos mit 0:3 zurück.
