<p><strong>Ein Feuer im Heckbereich seines Ferrari hat Michael Schumacher im freien Training zum Großen Preis von Frankreich frühzeitig gestoppt.</strong> Der siebenmalige Formel-1-Weltmeister mußte seinen Rennwagen in Magny-Cours bereits nach 25 Minuten und nur fünf Runden in der Box abstellen. Schumacher belegte wegen dieses Mißgeschicks nur den 14. Platz. Ob der Motor in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde und vor dem für die Startaufstellung entscheidenden Qualifying am Nachmittag gewechselt werden muß, blieb zunächst offen. Der Kanadier Jacques Villeneuve fuhr im BMW-Sauber auf in 1:17,005 Minuten die Bestzeit.
