Kerrs aim for deeper edge
Team excited to perform lindy hop this season

http://web.icenetwork.com/images/2008/01/10/Q3HUNAnn.jpg

By Lois Elfman, special to icenetwork.com (07/15/2008)

When ice dancers were faced with the challenge of creating a country or folk original dance for the 2007-08 season, many scratched their heads in confusion about what to perform. The opposite was the case for British ice dance champions Sinead Kerr and John Kerr, who knew they would perform a traditional Scottish dance in tribute to their homeland. They even breathed a sigh of relief when updated rules allowed John to wear a kilt.

"If you're going to do your national folk dance, then your national country outfit is kind of essential," says Sinead. "What we were wearing was totally authentic. We were happy with the outfits and happy with the reaction." The dance can be found on YouTube, and regardless of the language of the commentary, it's impossible to miss the enthusiasm in the commentators' voices.

Sinead, 29, and John, 28, appeared on the international scene during the 2003-04 season and immediately received recognition for their innovative approach. After the 2006 Winter Olympics, they decided they needed to make a change in their training in order to make further progress. They moved to the U.S. to train with two-time Olympic gold medalist Evgeny Platov. Currently based at the Princeton Sports Center in Monmouth Junction, N.J., the Kerrs are happy to be Platov's only team.

"We're very much used to training by ourselves all our career," says Sinead. For several years, they mostly worked without a coach in Scotland and traveled to Manchester, England to work with Joan Slater.

They enjoy having the virtually undivided attention of their coach, especially now that they've forged such a close bond with Platov. "It's an understanding of one another, what each other needs and how each other acts," Sinead notes. "The little nuances. Now we've got a great, great connection with him."

Last season was a major glide forward for the Kerrs, who finished sixth at Europeans and eighth at worlds. They took two weeks vacation after worlds and then returned to New Jersey for hard training. When Platov headed to Ukraine to visit his family in June, the Kerrs went to Scotland, where they took a family vacation and then trained alone in Edinburgh. Since returning to U.S. about two weeks ago, they've completed choreography on their original dance and free dance for the 2008-09 season. Always known for their cool programs, this year their focus is on upping their technical proficiency.

"That has been a difficult process for us, because I suppose mentally we've always had a bit of an artistic mindset," Sinead explains. "We liked to be a bit free to do what we want to do. It's kind of hard being tied down by restrictions sometimes.

"This year, we're trying to focus on being more competitive," she continues. "You can only get yourselves so far with innovation. To get that bit farther, to beat the ones at the top, if you're really serious about getting to the top in the world, then you've got to really start thinking on a more technical way. More, 'How can we actually beat these people?' rather than, 'How can we entertain the audience?' which is what we normally think about. Getting those two things together is sometimes pretty tough, but I think we can do that this year. We're going to focus on having a bit more competitive mindset to go alongside our innovative side this year."

For this year's original dance, teams can choose music of the 1920s, 30s or 40s. The Kerrs have chosen the 40s, and will perform a lindy hop-style program to music by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They've been working both on and off-ice with world swing champion Robert Royston.

They will not reveal the music for the free dance, but will say it's influenced by contemporary dance. "We wanted to come up with something this year that is going to showcase the fact that we've been working on what the judges perceive to be our weaknesses, which was a bit more depth to our skating," says Sinead. "We've picked a slightly slower piece, something that can hopefully show off edges and really free flowing skating, because that's what we've been working on a lot."

Their Grand Prix events are Skate America and Trophée Eric Bompard. The goal is to medal at one or both and carry that upward momentum into Europeans and worlds. Their parents will definitely be at worlds in Los Angeles (they went there once on vacation and are dying to go back), and Sinead and John are looking forward to sticking around the West Coast for a week after the competition. "Have a chill out there," she says.

In between the Grand Prix circuit and Europeans, the Kerrs have another very important competition -- the British Championships. "One of our secret aims is to beat Torvill and Dean's record as to how many times we can win it," Sinead says. The legendary British ice dancers won six consecutive titles 1978-83 and then a seventh title when they reinstated in 1994. This season, the Kerrs will go for their sixth consecutive title.

"We will never beat their international record," Sinead says, "but maybe we can beat them nationally."

off, sper ca fratii sa nu-si schimbe prea mult stilul pt a castiga o medalie.

Kerrs Continue to Push Dance Boundaries
Sinead and John Kerr
August 3, 2008
Article & Photo by Barry Mittan

The Scottish brother-and-sister team of Sinead and John Kerr perform their free dance to a space theme at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships.
Scottish ice dancers Sinead and John Kerr have always been among the most unique dancers competing at the international level. This year will be no different. The team will be using a contemporary dance to the music Ruled by Secrecy by Muse.

"I think that this music will really reflect Sinead and John's individuality," said coach Evgeny Platov. "While this program is entertaining like their past dances, this will be entertaining from a different angle."

In the dance, the brother-and-sister team will actually be portraying siblings. "They are a brother and sister who have survived tragic and unfortunate events, are reunited, and are helping each other through difficulties they encounter in their journey through life," explained Platov. "There will be a piano piece used in this music that shows very high emotions. It will be interesting to see how they show their dramatic sides as individuals - not just brother and sister."

"It's a bit risky," added Platov of the idea, "and we are hoping for the best. We really love this music and love working on this program. In today's new rules, it is difficult to create a program that connects the skaters, music, and audience. It's hard to meet the element requirements and reflect the characters of the theme at the same time." But risk was always part of the Kerr's repertoire.

In their early years, the Kerrs just wanted to make an impression and they did so. Their "Matrix" free dance at their 2004 Worlds debut was one of the most talked-about programs of the competition.

"The audience doesn't want to always see the same thing," John noted. "Everyone wants to have a different look and Delobel and Schoenfelder are really good at that. That inspired us to push it forward and find new ways of moving on the ice." With that in mind, the couple outdid themselves last season.

First, they made history when John wore a kilt in their Original Dance (OD), a Scottish folk dance. "When the Dance Committee announced the rules, we knew we had to do something to portray our Scottish-ness," John explained. "It would be hard for us to be Russian gypsies."

"As soon as it came out that it was 'OK' to wear the national dress, John was keen on doing a Scottish folk dance with a kilt," Sinead said. "Our fans would have been disappointed if we didn't do a Scottish dance. The music (Erin Shore and Auld Lang Syne by Robbie Burns) was very recognizable." "Once we got the committee to accept wearing a kilt, it was a no-brainer," John noted.

Unfortunately, the Kerrs couldn't use their family Tartan for the kilts. "We were limited by the material," Sinead explained. "We wanted red to stand out on the ice and something light enough that it wouldn't weigh down the costumes. A full kilt is eleven yards of material."

"You don't have to work so hard on the dances if Scottish is in your heart," added Sinead. "The dances aren't something you go to learn. It's something that is always done at weddings and school parties. When you're young, you go to the cèilidh and do the dances. It's just part of the culture."

The OD was hard to top, but their free dance was even better. Dancing to The Landing, Turn Around, and Gravity of Love by Enigma, the siblings portrayed space aliens.

"I had the music in my back pocket for a while, but because of the coaching change, we didn't want to do anything too unusual the year before," John explained. "When we were talking with Evgeny about the program for last season, the space theme came up. Evgeny surprised himself because he hadn't done anything like that before."

Indeed, Platov was a bit hesitant at first. "The music was great, but I was unsure of theme," he said. "Once we had the theme and characters down, it all came together. Natella Abdulaeva did an excellent job on the costumes."

"It was an innovative style of interpretation that no one had done before with the blank looks," Sinead added. "That was Tatiana Druchinina's idea. She made us look strange and alien. When we did our gala program, we also had hoods like speed skating outfits and used pulsating lights that made us look like we disappeared."

"Unfortunately we have not been working with Tatiana Druchinina this year, but we have been having some input from Maia Usova," John stated. Evgeny is our main coach and we are still really enjoying working with him. We think he's a fantastic coach and a huge source of inspiration."

"We've been working with Evgeny since June 2006," Sinead added. "We trained with him in Russia while he was doing Dancing on Ice, then worked with him in Edinburgh for two months and a few weeks in the United States before Worlds in 2007."

"We were training at Floyd Hall in New Jersey," John continued, "but we moved to the Princeton Sports Center in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey in October 2007. We moved for a couple of reasons. It was closer to Evgeny and an Olympic-sized rink, plus we got a good deal on ice time and better control of our ice than we had before."

"Evgeny is very open to ideas," John stated. "When you're older, you should be able to come up with your own ideas, not just do what a coach tells you. We need to have input into the process to skate our best and these days it's very much a group effort, probably 50-50 between them and us."

Platov agreed. "When you work with developed skaters like Sinead and John, you must allow for a good deal of input. A good coach must be very open to a skater's creativity and ideas as it serves as their motivation."

The couple trains for about four hours a day, five days a week on ice and two hours a day, six days a week off ice. "We do more in the summer when we're making up the programs," John explained. "Then we spend endless hours on ice, but with choreography, it's not as intense. We spend a lot of off ice time in the summer building strength and power. We do weights two or three hours a day three times a week and ballet two or three times a week plus dance lessons."

"This summer, we did bring in four-time World Swing Dance Champion, Robert Royston to work on our OD for this season," John continued. "Since we decided to take a 40's theme for our OD, it meant that we could take a swing/lindy hop style of dance which is definitely one of our favorites. Working with Robert has been great fun and he has been a great source of inspiration in putting the OD together. We're using two pieces from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Boogie Bumper and Minnie the Moocher."

Technically, their new OD will be more difficult as it's much faster than their Scottish dance from last season. Platov, however, sees no problems. "They are so lively," he said. "They both are familiar with swing and are able to pick up the tempo. With Robert's influence, it will be amazing." Platov calls Robert the 'walking encyclopedia of swing'. "He knows everything about this style of dance."

Although remaining true to their artistic roots, this summer the Kerrs have worked harder on improving their technical expertise. "We had a real breakthrough at last year's Europeans when we had the highest technical score," John noted. "It removed some doubts in people's minds about our technical abilities."

"Because we've always skated off the cuff and focused on presentation, our brains found it difficult to focus on the technical requirements and rein in our creativity," Sinead explained. "We were more 'go with the wind'."

"When you get older (he's 28, she's 29), it gets harder to adapt," John continued. "It's not as natural to you. The one disadvantage of the judging system is that older couples have gotten caught as the system has adapted. Now you have to be Level 4 on every element and still perform well. The great new generation of young couples came in from juniors knowing the system, so it's natural for them."

"There's always a little bit of difference between the callers at each event, so we're trying to make our moves as obvious as possible and by the book," John said. "We've got to make our step sequences more difficult and the twizzles have always been a bit of a bugbear for me, just not my thing."

"With the recent rule changes it has meant that it is now even harder to get Level 4 on your elements," Sinead noted. "This, of course, was what the Dance Technical committee wanted so it does mean we are having to spend a fair bit of time coming up with new ideas. One of the rule changes was that the lifts had to have difficult entries so coming up with things for that has been a lot of fun."

"Lifts have never been a problem for us," she continued. "We've always had at least one spectacular lift in each program. We're always thinking of something new. We don't want to do the same lifts a novice can do."

"We try not to do too many pretzel lifts," John added. "People just say 'Oh, I just saw another pretzel girl'. We think we can come up with something else."

"In the beginning, we also had some problems with spins because Sinead spins the opposite way as a lefty," John added. "So it was difficult for her to change direction."

The Kerrs have not had to worry about financial support lately. "Since we started getting such great support from first Sportscotland, and then UKsport, it has meant that we have been able to focus 100% on skating," John said.

"We've also gotten a lot more shows in Italy, Germany and Switzerland with Art on Ice and the Daniel Weiss Winter Tour," Sinead added. "The backing from UKsport pays for our training and the shows pay for our living expenses."

"I did some modeling for dress designer Alexander McQueen a few years ago to make some money," Sinead continued. John also did some advertising work, appearing in a coffee commercial and acting as a double for Ally McCoist in a movie. "I haven't been doing too much acting for a little while now," John noted. "That's not to say that I wouldn't like to do a little bit more of it in the future."

The Kerrs will open their 2008-09 season at Skate America, then travel to Paris for Trophée Eric Bompard Cachemire in November. "The Grand Prix event in Paris will be especially exciting for us as it is the only Grand Prix event that we have not competed in before," Sinead enthused. "Skate America should be great fun as well as we always enjoy performing in front of an American crowd. They are always so vociferous and supportive that you can't help but enjoy performing in front of them."

"I think if we could medal in both of our Grand Prix events," Sinead continued, "then that would be great. Also, if we could get into the top four at Europeans and the top 6 at Worlds then that would be a pretty good season."

They also hope to win a sixth straight British ice dance title and perhaps a seventh in 2010. "We'll continue to compete through the Vancouver Olympics for sure," Sinead said. "But we want to stop before people get bored with us. It's always better to quit when you're ahead."

"I'd like to always stay involved in the sport," she continued. "I'm not going to be a doctor or a lawyer. I've done a lot of media stuff before so I might get into journalism. I've put a lot of my life into this sport so why do something different."

"We've done a lot of broadcasting on television because we're talkative and people like our accents," John added.

Off ice, Sinead said, "I like to do normal things with non-skaters." John said," I like to play golf with Evgeny and go-carting with our little brother. In June, we went back home to Scotland to spend some much needed vacation time with our family. It's very important for us to get back home to spend time with our younger brother David, who is autistic, and our parents."

"We also spent some of that time at Wimbledon which was a brilliant experience. Cheering on fellow Scot Andy Murray was a definite highlight," he added.

This season, audiences can expect the Kerrs to have some highlights of their own.

Time for so news about the Kerr's :P
Kerrs eager to showcase ‘daring’ dance

It is a bit of a daring choice, but, strangely enough, I think other couples are starting to pick up on the theme, because there have been some interesting choices of music this year," said John, who has always championed a move away from Bolero-style classical dancing in favour of athleticism, excitement and adventurousness.

"We want to tune up before the Grand Prix meeting in the US and, if we win in Finland, it would actually see us rise to No.6 in the ISU world rankings, which would be our highest-ever placing on the list, so there are no shortage of incentives for us in the months ahead.

EUROPEAN ICE DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, HELSINKI
Kerr siblings dance way to bronze
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45408000/jpg/_45408833_kerr.jpg

Sinead and John Kerr claimed bronze for Britain's first medal in 15 years at the European ice dance championships in Helsinki, Finland.

The Scots pipped France's Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat to the podium to win their first major medal.

Russia's Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski won their maiden European title ahead of Italy's Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali.

"It was worth coming," said an emotional John Kerr.

Britain's last figure skating medal was won by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean at the 1994 Euros.

The triumphant Russians amassed 196.91 points, more than 10 points ahead of Italians Faiella and Scali (186.17), with the Scottish pair scoring 185.20.

"This gold medal is only the beginning, but it was a big step for us," said Khoklova, who with Novitski was third in the European and world championships last year.

Khokhlova and Novitski dominated the competition - top-scoring in all three dances - in the absence of world champions Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France and last year's European champions Oxana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia.

Sinead and John prepare for Olympic tilt

Mar 5 2009 by Eric MacKinnon, West Lothian Courier

SINEAD and John Kerr were busy preparing for one of the biggest nights of their lives.

Not since 1994 – and the heyday of the legendary Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean – had the UK earned a figure skating medal – but that was all about to change.

They took their place on the ice and a hush fell over the Helsinki arena before in a sudden flash, the opening bars of Muse track Ruled By Secrecy burst forth like a ravenous beast returning to reclaim its territory

The Livingston siblings set off to the hiss of the steel blades on ice and produced a stunning emotional dance that brought a podium place, a prestigious medal and a place alongside the greats of British skating.

Sinead and John Kerr claimed bronze for Britain's first medal in 15 years at the European ice dance championships in Finland, pipping France's Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat to the podium to win their first major medal.

It was the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice for the duo who have been skating for most of their lives and have progressed from the local rinks of West Lothian to the international arena where comparisons to Torvill and Dean are inevitable.

The Kerr siblings are six times British champions, equalling the record set by, you guessed it, Jayne and Christopher.

And although keen to leave their own legacy John admits to being thrilled at being talked about in the same breath as the legends.

"It's nice to be compared to them," said John, "but to be honest we are only compared to them because we are all British. We have very different styles and they were of course huge stars worldwide.

"Chris and Jayne are the ice skating equivalent of guys like Diego Maradona or Pele in football and we just want to keep doing what we are doing and earn reputations in our own right."

Taking their place on the podium in Helsinki meant the West Lothian pair joined a very exclusive club of UK medal winners and justified their decision to leave their home in Scotland and resettle on the opposite side of the Atlantic in New Jersey.

It’s been a long and difficult road to where they are now with both admitting they have had to sacrifice a lot in their personal lives due to their dedication to ice skating – including Irn-Bru.

John continued: "We moved to America in the summer of 2006 and it was definitely the right move for us. In coaching terms it was an easy decision to make as the best coaches are all based over here and we needed that calibre of coach to take our skating to the next level.

"There are a few things we miss about Scotland but at the moment home cooked meals aren't one of them as our mum is visiting us at the moment so that's great. I do miss my friends and being able to nip down to Livingston or Edinburgh at anytime I fancy but I also miss Irn-Bru.

"My mum brings over other things we love from home like Jammie Dodgers but it's harder to bring Irn-Bru over in case it depressureises and bursts all over her luggage. I believe you can get it in New York but not where we are in New Jersey.

“It has also been amazing to not just see but skate in places and at sites you've only ever seen on TV like the Rockefeller Centre, Central Park and on Long Island."

Sinead was the first in the family to be bitten by the ice-skating bug at just five years of age and it took her younger brother a little longer to join in.

He didn’t follow his sister onto the ice for a further five years and they didn't team up for another decade.

John continued: "I started skating at the local rink in Livingston when I was eight or nine years old. A lot of people start earlier than that but I took it up simply for something to do. It was a new hobby for me but like anything once you get into something and get good at it you keep going.

"It wasn't until I was aged about 18 and Sinead 20 that we decided to team up. She was definitely the best partner I could possibly get and to be honest, she shouldn't have given me a second glance due to the level she had reached.

"I was lacking in experience but she gave me a chance to do something in a different part of the sport which I took."

But the road to figure skating silverware has been paved with odd jobs and opportunities of a lifetime.

John has starred in a Hollywood blockbuster while Sinead strutted her stuff on an Alexander McQueen ice catwalk infront of A-Listers like Jude Law and Oscar winner Kate Winslet.

And they could both be stars of the small screen as well after John revealed they could have been skating with stars every Sunday night had they accepted an invitation from Torvill and Dean.

The West Lothian pair were invited to join the first series of the ITV smash-hit Dancing on Ice by Jayne Torvill.

The ITV show pairs ice skaters with celebrities and John has revealed that they had been pencilled in as two of the professional skaters to dance with the stars every Sunday night.

But the New Jersey-based duo snubbed the offer to focus on their Olympic dream.

John admitted: "We were invited to join and skate with some of the celeb's on the first series of the TV show but it was in the middle of our Olympic season so we couldn't do it.

"I have seen the show and anything which raises the profile of ice skating is a good thing. But to be honest we also felt many of the celebrities were so D-List that we would have been more famous than them."

And 28-year-old John also acted as Rangers and Scotland legend Ally McCoist's body-double but he isn't sure if his Hollywood debut made it past the cutting room floor.

"I ended up working as an extra on the Robert Duvall movie A Shot at Glory as a body double for Ally McCoist

"He was heavier than me," insisted John, "but they needed a double for him as he ran across some sand dunes because he was playing for Kilmarnock at the time. They cut my hair in a certain way but it was a far-off shot and one I don't even know made the final cut."

In three weeks time Sinead and John are back in competitive action for the World Championships in Los Angeles in which results could have a big bearing on places at next year's Winter Olympics

"We're going to Los Angeles in three weeks in what will be qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Vancouver," said John

"This will be a very important event and we are completely focused on that at the moment although a medal at the Olympics has always been our dream."

Their skating career is in the more than capable hands and feet of their Ukranian coach Evgeny Platov who John admits has a CV to rival most on the ice.

"He is a two-time Olympic Champion but his claim to fame is that he beat Torvill and Dean which is something he never tires of reminding us of," he laughed. The memories of their medal-winning display remain understandably fresh in the minds of both Sinead and John and he admits taking their place on the podium was an emotional moment.

"When the marks came up we knew we were in with a decent chance," admitted John, "and I did get a little tearful.

"It was a very important moment for us and made it all worthwhile. After many years of hard work and support it was a nice reward.

"We've had great funding from UKSport and from the Scottish Institute for Sport and we'd like to thank them for their continuing support and the medal was great for everyone involved."

A flash of sequins under the lights are a common sight at ice rinks but at the championships John reveals he and his sister sported 'designer rags'.

John added: "Our costumes at the event were actually just normal clothes but they were ripped and shredded like we had been in a bomb blast. "The concept was disasters so we were wearing shredded clothes which I suppose you could call designer rags.

"The song we performed to when we won the bronze was by Muse and a lot of thought goes into our song choice as you have to determine whether it is skateable.

"It is a long process and in fact anytime we hear a song on the radio or at the movies we wonder if we could skate to it.”

Ice skating has certainly come a long way since the first recorded instances in Southern Finland more than 4000 years ago when skates were fashioned from sharpened and flattened pieces of bone strapped to the bottom of the foot.

Now ice skating has brought a West Lothian brother and sister to the peak of their sporting mountain and few would bet against seeing Olympic gold resting on the family mantlepiece in Livingston before long.
