MELBOURNE, Jan 16 - Australian tennis fans eagerly watching the talented crop of junior players had reason to rejoice and despair yesterday at the Uncle Tobys ITF Australian Hardcourt Championships.

Queenslander Robert Smeets had a spectacular win over fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA), but Chris Guccione (Greenvale, VIC) was once again defeated by Mathieu Montcourt (FRA), his opponent in the final of the Loy Yang ITF Victorian Championships in Traralgon last week. Adam Feeney (Bateau Bay, NSW) bowed out to another Frenchman, Josselin Ouanna.

Top seed Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) continued his winning streak, overcoming Great Britain's last hope Guy Thomas in straight sets. No. 2 seed Brian Baker took a couple of tie breaks to dispose of Germany's [16]Michael Zverev 76(1) 76(3), [9]Scott Oudsema (USA), 2002 Wimbledon Junior doubles champ Horia Tecau (ROM) :thinkso: , and Sergiy Stakhovsky are also through to the quarter finals.

In the girls' singles Darya Ivanov put up a brave fight but in a final tie break Sweden's Mari Andersson came out on top 63 36 76(4). Unseeded New Zealander Eden Marama created the upset of the day defeating 2002 ITF Junior Champion and No. 2 seed Petra Cetkovska (CZE) 61 61.

In doubles the two Christophers, Letcher and Singh, have won their second round match and Adam Feeney and Sam Withell are also through.
