The ATP Race is a calendar-year points race which reflects the performances of the world's best players in the current year. The Race determines the year-end world No.1 and which eight players qualify for Tennis Masters Cup.

Every Player, regardless of his performances in the previous year, starts with zero points. Players count 18 performances in their ATP Race total. Players eligible to enter the Grand Slams and ATP Masters Series events must count those events and their best five other results from the International Series events. The Tennis Masters Cup will count as an additional 19th tournament for the eight players who qualify.

Unlike the ATP Ranking, results from Challenger events do not count towards a player's ATP Race position.

For each Grand Slam or ATP Masters Series event a player is not accepted, he may count one extra International Series event towards his ATP Race position (and ATP Ranking).

The ATP Rankings is known colloquially by fans as 'the world ranking.' For example, when Roger Federer is No. 1 in the ATP Rankings he is said to be the No. 1 player in the world. Or a player who is No. 7 in the ATP Rankings is said to be a 'Top 10 player.'

The ATP Rankings is the ATP's historical objective merit-based method used for determining entry and seeding in all tournaments for both singles and doubles, except as modified for World Team Championship and Tennis Masters Cup.

The ATP Rankings period is the immediate past 52 weeks, except for:
(i) the Tennis Masters Cup, which is dropped on the Monday following the last ATP event of the following year;
(ii) Futures Series Tournaments that are only entered into the System on the second Monday following the Tournament's week. Once entered, all Tournaments, except for the Tennis Masters Cup, remain in the System for 52 consecutive weeks.

The ATP Ranking is based on calculating, for each player, his total points from the 13 'mandatory' events - the four Grand Slams and the nine ATP Masters Series tournaments - and his best five results from all eligible International Series tournaments from the past 52 weeks. The Tennis Masters Cup counts as an additional 19th tournament for players who qualify for the circuit finale.

For each 'mandatory' event a player is not accepted he may count one extra International Series event towards his ATP Ranking
