"Of course I want to skate well. Competition is very important to me, but fans are important too. If I skate well then I make the fans happy and I make myself happy. Everybody is happy."

Alexei "When you train on bad ice, it becomes easier when you compete on good ice."

Evgeni: "I skate for the fans. It's not as fun without them there supporting me. I get energy from them and I want to skate well for them. They relax me. They make me happy when I skate for them."

Johnny “Figure skating is an amazing ride. It takes you from feeling like the lowest scum in the pond, like two hours ago. And now I feel like a flower growing out of the pond.”

Brian: “Now you can win without a quad, and that doesn't seem right.”

Katarina Witt "It's hard work to make a four-minute program look effortless and elegant."
"It tells you have to work hard to earn your success. If you are willing to do that and you have passion for it, you can achieve something wonderful. "

Dorothy Hamill
* "I wasn't particularly athletic or gifted, but I loved it. I'd be at the skating rink all day long, just skating around and around. I could be all alone and nobody could get near me and I didn't have to talk to anybody. I was in my fantasy world."
* "I worked as hard as I could. I was always the first one on the ice and the last one off."

It’s true but this is what a competition is about. We all want to win. We all want our medals. And then I was very anxious to show what I was, eager to demonstrate that I was strong, because since after the decision to go to Tokyo I knew I was able to compete and produce a good performance over there. And my fall during the short programme enraged me and gave me an impetus to plunge into a battle during the long programme.

A sportsman needs to be a masochist to a certain extent if he wants to be a high level sportman. If you don’t like to suffer, you are unlikely to go far. And you could ask it so many other sportsmen. You need to suffer in order to succeed. Now I am not a masochist in the sense that I am not “bleeding” during my practice. However it’s necessary to work and it’s evident.

One mustn’t give up, I think. The main principle of a high level sportsman is that whatever happens, you shouldn’t be afraid to work. Should not be afraid of defeat, and it’s simply necessary to struggle through, day in day out.

Without strength and courage it's really hard to perform at the highest levels of international figure skating, because you're alone on the ice and you only have seven minutes over two nights to prove yourself.

I graduated a the top of my class in the '84 Olympic Games; I won a gold medal.

I just try to touch people's hearts in a way through skating, so they're not just witnessing a performance, they're feeling a performance and they're a part of it.

I try to remember that today is special, and that tomorrow is going to be a lot different.

What was really funny is that as I got older all those guys who called me a sissy in junior high school wanted me to be their best friend because they wanted to meet all the girls that I knew in figure skating.

Competitive skaters must be prepared for lots of work, challenges, self-discipline, and motivation. The desire must be there, but more importantly, you're love for the sport.

I like to listen to different kinds of music - it just depends on my mood. I love Madonna, Russian singers... I like the Rolling Stones a lot!

I wish I could say it's easy, but honestly, to get ready for a big championship is not as easy as it seems.

Brian is brain." Imi place ff mult...

Da si mie mi-a placut cand am citit..are perfecta dreptate :)

Tomas Verner:
"At the beginning of the competition I was offended because on eurosport they said Lambiel and Joubert will be fighting for the title, any word about me. So I had to show them."

Brian Joubert:
" I don’t like to be third, I want to be first, that’s it"
But psychological games are going on…
"Yes, at practice, in the hotel, everywhere. It’s really like a game"

Stephane Lambiel:
" I don’t think I have to explain anything, you could see what I did. "

Quotes from the pairs after the free program

By Helga Dobor

Laura Maggiteri – Ondrej Hotarek (ITA)

Are you satisfied with your program?

Laura Maggiteri : We just went on the ice and I felt I had no power.

Until l ast week we did it. We were a little tired and I jumped little strange that gave him a problem having me on the shoulder and we couldn’t do it. But it was only one competitions and another time we will show it.

Yuko Kawaguchi – Alexander Smirnov (RUS) bronze

Alexander Smirnov : I don’t want to comment.

Yuko Kawaguchi: Lately we always skated first in our group, so this made no difference. Now we just have to sit back, watch and wait for the others to skate. There is nothing else we can do.

You landed the quad…

Yuko Kawaguchi: Yes. We were trying it on almost every competition and I’m happy we landed it here at the Europeans Championships.

Before the medal ceremony:

Alexander Smirnov : After our performance I didn’t expect to medal at all. I was very upset, because I didn’t do my job at all tonight, not even at 50 percent.

Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov (RUS) silver

Maxim Trankov: We feel very drained from our performance. We skated very badly; we had problems with the jump because it w asn’t so powerful. I don’t know what was wrong but we have just medalled and that’s the important. To be in the top three in our debut at Europeans is not bad!

Congratulations to your results!

Maxim Trankov: Thank you very much!

Aliona Savchenko – Robin Szolkowy (GER) gold

Robin Szolkowy : I am not totally pleased as I didn’t do my triple Salchow. Overall I wasn’t so pleased with the solo jumps, I made a few mistakes. But the performance was quite good tonight. We have a lot to do before Worlds. Our main rivals will come from China and Russia.

Aliona Savchenko : I felt heavy on the ice. I told myself I can do this and I stood up. But I can’t say right now that I’m really happy, maybe tomorrow I will be.
