THE DEATH OF MR LAZARESCU (Moartea domnului Lazarescu)
Director: Cristi Puiu. Cast: Ioan Fiscuteanu, Luminita Gheorghiu, Gabriel Spahiu, Doru Ana, Dana Dogaru. Romania 2005. 153mins. Subtitled.
THE DEATH OF MR LAZERSCU from Romanian director Cristi Puiu was awarded Cannes' Un Certain Regard-Fondation Grand Prix, bestowed by the Jury headed by American director Alexander Payne. This "road-movie" in an ambulance follows the nighttime trip of 63-year old Mr. Lazarescu, who is sick and living alone in an apartment with three cats. When he starts feeling ill it takes a long time for the ambulance to come, and once they arrive, they don't seem to be able to find a hospital for him.
This is a love story, a comedy, a film about old age and the healthcare establishment, but, most of all it is a film about overwhelming indifference, thoughtlessness and lack of communication - Director's Statement


THE ITALIAN GIRLS (Italiencele)
Director: Napoleon Helmis. Cast: Mara Nicolescu, Ana Ularu, Vlad Zamfirescu, Costel Cascaval, Valentin Popescu. Romania 2004. 82mins. Subtitled.
THE ITALIAN GIRLS is the story of two young sisters from a village in Oltenia who are planning to flee home in pursuit of getting work as cherry pickers in Spain. A year later they return home "victoriously" and with a western attitude. Villagers soon realize that the girls were actually victims of human traffickers. While confronting serious issues, the film's lyricism and comic timing often reminds of Emir Kusturica's BLACK CAT WHITE CAT.


RYNA
Director: Ruxandra Zenide. Cast: Dorotheea Petre, Valentin Popescu, Nicolae Praida, Matthieu Rozé, Aura Calarasu. Romania/Switzerland 2005. 91mins. Subtitled.
In a small community in the Danube Delta that wavers between old traditions and new material aspirations, teenager Ryna (Dorotheea Petre) pays a heavy price in search of her own identity. Suppressed by her father, a mechanic, Ryna has to play the role of a hands-on son and a submissive daughter. At the same time she is (perhaps) in love with the postman and chased by the mayor and a French anthropologist. Petre plays her part with intriguing re-assurance, a small person with big presence. She won the Best Debut at the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) 2005.

Today is "Challenge Day". That means everybody must do sport. A story about those who don't fancy sports today.


GREEN OAKS
Director: Ruxandra Zenide. Cast: George Hoffman, Gabriela Popescu, Valentin Popescu, Julieta Strimbeanu, Maria Dinulescu. Romania 2003. 34mins. Subtitled.
George takes care of his younger sister. They are orphans. The adults have decided to separate them, but George is determined to fight.


TRAFFIC
Director: Catalin Mitulescu. Cast: Bogdan Dumitrache, Maria Dinulescu, Ana Bart, Andy Vasluianu, Eva Dan, Ioana Siminie. Romania 2004. 15mins. Subtitled.
On his way to his next business meeting, Tudor has a 20 minute break. Enough time to invite a girl to drink a coffee, talk about his daughter and take a photo.
2005 Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award for emerging filmmakers; 2004 Palme d'Or du court métrage.


LIVIU'S DREAM (Visul lui Liviu)
Director: Corneliu Porumboiu. Cast: Dragos Bucur, Luiza Cocora, Constantin Dita, Adrian Vancica. Romania 2003. 40mins. Subtitled.
A strange dream, forgotten in the morning, is making Liviu look with resignation on the world he lives in. His awakening seems to coincide with the birth of his child... Winner of the CNC (Romanian Cinematography Council) script Contest 2004. Best Romanian Short Film, the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) 2004.


A TRIP TO THE CITY (Calatorie la oras)
Director: Corneliu Porumboiu. Cast: Constantin Dita, Ion Sapdaru. Romania 2003. 39mins. Subtitled.
Once upon a time on a beautiful morning, a little village needs the internet and the mayor's wife cries for an indoor toilet. So it comes that the passionate computer teacher and the mayor's helper come together for a little trip to the city. This is a trip starting at an obsolete mode of life and ends by pointing to a new look at the world. Winner: Silver Award, Cinefondation, Cannes Film Festival 2004; Grand Prix Festival du Film Mediterraneen, Montpellier 2004; Commendation Kerry Film Festival 2004; Best Director, Anonimul Festival, Sfintul Gheorghe, Romania 2004; Best script and Critics Prize, Cinemaiubit Festival, Bucharest 2003.


A LINEMAN'S CABIN (Canton)
Director: Constantin Popescu. Cast: Petre Nicolae, Nicodim Ungureanu, Mihai Constantin, Ioan Gyuri Pascu, Alina Marcu. Romania 2005. 30mins. Subtitled.
Two railway men are living in a lineman's cabin. They have nothing to do and they are alone in the middle of nowhere. One night a stranger has an accident on the nearby beach, an accident that will change everything for ever ...
With a perfect sense for pace and narrative/suspense, Popescu is set to bring great work to the screen in the future.


CIGARETTES AND COFFEE (Un cartus de Kent si un pachet de cafea)
Director: Cristi Puiu. Cast: Victor Rebengiuc, Mimi Branescu, Mihai Bratila. Romania 2003. 13mins. Subtitled.
THE DEATH OF MR LAZARESCU director made this short as homage to Jim Jarmusch's COFFEE AND CIGARETTES. With it he won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004. The film is a remarkable statement about society undergoing profound change.

CHILDREN OF THE DECREE (Decreteii)
Director: Florin Iepan. Romania 2004. 68mins. Documentary. Subtitled.
This chilling documentary studies Romania's quest to increase their po****tion by over fifty percent in a single decade by imposing a 1966 ban on terminating unwanted pregnancies and making contraception unavailable. Interviewing people who were born due to the decree, the film proceeds to show how the very people Ceausescu 'created' turned against him and brought him to fall.
